However, this textured surface creates microscopic "valleys" and "peaks" that act as a trap for airborne particulates, skin cells, and household oils. Over time, these particles bond to the plastic, creating a grayish-yellow film that cannot be removed by simple air-blowing or light dusting. This accumulation is often exacerbated by the fan's own airflow patterns, which can pull dust toward the outer housing of the unit. If you notice the grime is concentrated around the intake vents or the base, it is likely a combination of electrostatic attraction and settled environmental dust. You can confirm the type of buildup by rubbing a small section with a damp cloth; if the cloth comes away brown or grey, you are dealing with atmospheric soot and dust; if it feels tacky, it is a lipid-based film from kitchen grease or fingerprints.
How to Fix It
To restore the original white finish without scratching the plastic or damaging the internal electronics, follow this precise sequence:
- Power down the unit and disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet. This prevents accidental activation and protects the motor from any moisture ingress during cleaning.
- Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft-brush attachment to remove loose debris from the exterior grille and the base. This is critical; if you apply a wet cloth to a dusty surface, you will create a "mud" that pushes grime deeper into the plastic texture.
- Prepare a cleaning solution using a microfiber cloth dampened with distilled water. If the plastic is heavily soiled, mix one drop of pH-neutral dish soap into a bowl of warm water. Wring the cloth out thoroughly so it is damp, not dripping.

- Avoid using aerosol cleaning sprays directly on the unit. The mist can enter the motor housing and cause electrical shorts or leave a sticky residue on the fan blades, which leads to imbalance and noise.
