The Honeywell Home T9 (RCHT9610WFSW2003) operates using a "Weighted Average" logic. By default, the system attempts to balance the temperature across all paired wireless sensors and the internal thermostat sensor. When you feel a specific room is too cold or hot despite the thermostat reading the target temperature, it is because the system is averaging the data from every active sensor, effectively "diluting" the temperature reading of the room you actually care about. This happens because the T9 is designed for whole-home comfort, but it cannot physically move air to specific rooms—it only controls the HVAC equipment. To prioritize a room, you must tell the T9 to ignore the sensors in other rooms (like a hallway or a garage) and base its heating or cooling decisions exclusively on the sensors located in your primary living space or bedroom. You can confirm this is the issue if the thermostat display shows a "Current Temp" that is an average of multiple rooms, while the specific room you are sitting in feels significantly different.
How to Fix It
To prioritize a specific room and force the T9 to ignore non-essential sensors, follow these precise steps on the thermostat interface:
- Wake the thermostat by tapping the screen. Press the Menu icon on the home screen.
- Scroll down and select Priority from the options list.
- You will see a list of all paired wireless sensors and the internal thermostat sensor. Uncheck every room that you do not want the system to consider when calculating the temperature.
- Check only the sensor(s) located in the room you wish to prioritize (e.g., "Master Bedroom" or "Living Room").
- If you want the system to prioritize a specific room during the night and a different one during the day, you must perform this selection within the Schedule settings. Navigate to Menu > Schedule, select the specific time period (e.g., "Sleep"), and then assign the priority sensor for that specific window.
- Press Done or the back arrow to save the settings. The thermostat will now update the "Current Temp" on the home screen to reflect only the temperature of the prioritized room(s).
If That Didn't Work
- Check Sensor Placement: If the prioritized room is still not reaching the target temperature, ensure the sensor is not placed near a drafty window, an exterior wall, or in direct sunlight. A sensor placed on a cold exterior wall will report a lower temperature than the center of the room, causing the heat to run indefinitely without actually warming the air.
- Verify Signal Strength: If the sensor is "dropping" from the priority list, it may have a weak connection. The T9 sensors use a proprietary wireless protocol; if the sensor is more than 60 feet away or separated by thick masonry/metal, the thermostat may default back to the internal sensor. Replace the CR2450 battery in the sensor to ensure the transmitter is at full strength.
- Adjust the "Average" Logic: If you have multiple sensors in one large room, keep all of them checked. The T9 will average those specific sensors, providing a more accurate representation of that room's climate than a single sensor would.
- Calibrate the Temperature: If the sensor is reporting a temperature that feels wrong compared to a handheld thermometer, go to Menu > Advanced Settings > Temperature Calibration. You can offset the reading by +/- 4 degrees to align the sensor with your actual comfort level.
Heads Up
- Battery Life: Wireless sensors use CR2450 coin cell batteries. When a sensor fails or disappears from the Priority list, this is almost always the cause. Replace them annually to avoid system logic errors.
- Avoid "Short Cycling": If you prioritize a room that is very far from the thermostat, the system may run for a long time to satisfy that room, potentially overheating the area where the main thermostat is located.
- Sensor Pairing: Always name your sensors immediately upon pairing (e.g., "Office", "Nursery"). If you leave them as "Sensor 1" and "Sensor 2," managing Priority settings becomes confusing and leads to incorrect room selection.
