Mineral buildup, commonly known as limescale, occurs when calcium and magnesium from your tap water crystallize inside the narrow apertures of the water distribution tray. In the Sweetcrispy portable model, these "tiny holes" are the primary delivery system that ensures an even layer of water covers the evaporator plate. When these holes clog, the machine cannot distribute water uniformly, leading to malformed ice cubes, "clumping" where only a few cubes freeze, or the machine cycling through a freeze cycle without actually producing ice.
This scale is not just a surface stain; it is a hard mineral crust that bonds to the plastic and metal. A simple rinse or a quick vinegar wipe is insufficient because the deposits are located *inside* the narrow channels of the distribution manifold. You can confirm this by looking at the distribution tray (the plastic piece above the freezing spikes) and seeing white, chalky residue blocking the small perforations. If the water isn't dripping evenly across the entire plate during the "filling" phase, your distribution tray is obstructed.
How to Fix It
To fully clear the scale and sanitize the internal components, follow this deep-cleaning protocol:
- Unplug the unit from the wall outlet and remove the ice basket and scoop. Drain all remaining water from the reservoir into the sink.
- Carefully remove the water distribution tray. In this model, the tray is the plastic assembly located directly above the freezing plate. Depending on your specific batch, this may require gently lifting the plastic tabs or sliding the tray forward. Do not force it, as the plastic clips are brittle.
- Prepare a soaking solution using a 1:1 ratio of distilled white vinegar and warm (not boiling) water in a shallow basin.
- Submerge the distribution tray in the solution for 30 to 60 minutes. This allows the acetic acid to break the chemical bond of the calcium carbonate.
- While the tray is soaking, fill the main water reservoir with a mixture of 2 cups of white vinegar and 4 cups of water. Run one full "Ice" cycle. This cleans the internal pump and the evaporator spikes where you cannot reach with a brush.
- Remove the tray from the soak. Use a fine-gauge sewing needle or a wooden toothpick to manually poke through every single small hole in the tray to ensure no debris remains.
- Rinse the tray and the interior of the machine thoroughly with distilled water to remove any lingering vinegar scent.
- Reinstall the tray, refill with fresh water, and run two "cleaning cycles" (cycles where you discard the ice) before using the machine for consumption.
If That Didn't Work
- Citric Acid Treatment: If vinegar isn't strong enough, use food-grade citric acid powder. Mix 2 tablespoons of powder into 1 liter of warm water. This is significantly more aggressive at dissolving hard water scale than vinegar and is the industry standard for descaling coffee machines and ice makers.
- Mechanical Scrubbing: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush dipped in a paste of baking soda and water to scrub the evaporator plate (the metal spikes). Be extremely careful not to scratch the metal, as any deep scratches can lead to refrigerant leaks or premature corrosion.
- Distilled Water Switch: If you live in a hard-water area, stop using tap water entirely. Switch to distilled water. This removes the source of the minerals, preventing the scale from returning and extending the life of the pump.
- Hydrogen Peroxide Sanitize: If you suspect biofilm (slime) in addition to scale, use a diluted 3% hydrogen peroxide solution to wipe down the reservoir and tray. Rinse thoroughly with water after use.

- Avoid Abrasives: Never use steel wool, scouring pads, or harsh chemical cleaners like bleach inside the ice maker. These can strip the protective coating off the evaporator plate, causing the metal to pit and rust.
- Frequency: If you use tap water, perform the vinegar soak every 2 weeks. Waiting until the holes are visibly clogged often means the pump is already struggling against the resistance.
- Drainage: Always tilt the machine slightly forward when draining the reservoir to ensure no stagnant water remains in the pump housing, which prevents mold growth.
- Scent Removal: If the ice tastes like vinegar after cleaning, run three consecutive cycles with distilled water and discard the ice each time to fully purge the system.
