Diagnosis
The "plastic-y" or stagnant taste in the Sweetcrispy Countertop Ice Maker is typically caused by one of two things: off-gassing from the food-grade plastics used in the reservoir and tubing during the "break-in" period, or the accumulation of a biofilm (slime) within the internal water lines. Because this machine uses a small-batch circulation system, any residual manufacturing oils or mineral deposits from hard water can become trapped in the narrow tubing, leaching a chemical taste into the 9-cube cycles. If the ice tastes like a "previous batch," you are likely experiencing "ice melt-back." Since this unit is not freezer-capable, the ice in the basket slowly melts and the water drips back into the reservoir. This recycled water carries concentrated minerals and organic odors back into the freezing mechanism, creating a loop of flavor contamination. To confirm this, smell the standing water in the reservoir; if it smells musty or like old plastic, the internal circulation is contaminated.
How to Fix It
To eliminate the taste and sanitize the internal lines, you must perform a deep chemical purge followed by a series of "flush cycles."
- Empty and Dry: Remove the ice basket and scoop. Pour out all standing water from the reservoir. Wipe the interior with a clean, lint-free microfiber cloth.
- Prepare the Solution: Mix a solution of 1 part white distilled vinegar to 3 parts warm water. Do not use bleach, as it can degrade the internal seals of the Sweetcrispy unit.
- The Soak: Pour the vinegar solution into the reservoir until it reaches the "MAX" fill line. Let the machine sit idle for 30 minutes to allow the acid to break down mineral scale and plastic residues.
- The Cycle Run: Turn the machine on and let it complete two full freeze-and-drop cycles. Once the basket is full of "vinegar ice," discard all the cubes immediately.
- The Fresh Water Flush: Fill the reservoir with filtered or distilled water. Run the machine for 3 to 4 consecutive cycles. Do not consume this ice; discard it all. This process pushes any remaining vinegar and loosened contaminants out of the tubing.
- Final Rinse: Wipe the interior of the reservoir one last time with a damp cloth before starting your first "consumption" batch.
If That Didn't Work
- Switch to Distilled Water: If you have hard water (high calcium/magnesium), the minerals react with the plastic tubing to create a metallic or "chemical" taste. Replace your tap water with distilled water for one week to see if the taste vanishes.
- Check the Air Filter/Vent: Ensure the machine is not placed too close to a wall or under a cabinet. Overheating can cause the plastic housing to off-gas, which can subtly affect the flavor of the ice as it drops. Maintain at least 6 inches of clearance around the vents.
- Deep Clean the Scoop and Basket: Often the taste isn't in the ice, but in the plastic basket or scoop. Wash these in hot, soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Plastic absorbs odors; if the basket was stored in a cupboard with other scented items, it may transfer that taste to the ice.
- Inspect for Mold: If a "musty" taste persists, use a specialized appliance cleaner (citric acid based) instead of vinegar. Some biofilms are resistant to vinegar and require a stronger descaling agent to be fully stripped from the internal evaporator pins.

- Avoid Recirculation: Never let ice sit in the basket for more than 2 hours. The melt-water that returns to the reservoir is the primary cause of "old ice" taste.
- Weekly Maintenance: Perform a vinegar rinse once every two weeks to prevent mineral buildup on the cooling pins, which can cause the machine to work harder and produce smaller, tastier cubes.
- Filtered Water Only: To extend the life of the machine and keep the taste neutral, use a Brita or similar filtered pitcher rather than direct tap water.
- Dry Before Storage: If you aren't using the machine for a few days, empty the water and leave the lid open to air dry. Closing the lid on a damp reservoir creates a breeding ground for the bacteria that cause "weird" tastes.
