Diagnosis
The frustration with the Frigidaire EFIC452-SSRED stems from a design choice: the machine is largely a sealed unit. Unlike high-end commercial machines, the cooling plates, water pumps, and internal tubing are not user-removable. If you try to force the internal chassis apart, you will likely snap the plastic clips or puncture the refrigerant lines. The "cleaning" process is therefore split between external surface scrubbing and a chemical-mechanical flush of the internal lines. Over time, calcium and magnesium deposits from tap water build up on the evaporator pins (the metal spikes where ice forms). This "scaling" creates a rough surface that causes ice cubes to stick, resulting in malformed cubes or a "full" sensor trigger even when the basket is empty. Because you cannot physically scrub these pins, you must rely on a descaling agent to dissolve the mineral buildup from the inside out. You can confirm the need for a deep clean if you notice a white, chalky residue around the water intake or if the ice production cycle takes significantly longer than the standard 6-7 minutes.
How to Fix It
To thoroughly sanitize and descale your EFIC452-SSRED, follow this precise sequence:
- External Component Wash: Unplug the unit from the wall. Remove the ice basket and the removable water reservoir. Wash both using a mild dish soap and warm water. Use a soft nylon brush to clean the crevices of the basket. Dry them completely with a lint-free towel before re-inserting.
- Interior Surface Wipe: Use a damp microfiber cloth dipped in a mixture of water and white vinegar (50/50 ratio). Wipe down the interior walls and the area around the ice-drop chute. Do not spray liquid directly into the vents to avoid shorting the control board.
- Prepare Descaling Solution: Fill the reservoir with a solution of 1 part white distilled vinegar to 3 parts warm water. Alternatively, use a commercial citric acid-based descaler. Fill to the "Max" line.
- Initiate Self-Clean Mode: Plug the unit back in. Ensure the reservoir is seated correctly. Press and hold the Power and Select buttons simultaneously for approximately 3 to 5 seconds. The LED display will change to "CLn," indicating the self-cleaning cycle has started.
- The Cycle Process: The machine will run a 15-minute automated sequence where it circulates the solution over the evaporator pins and flushes the internal pump. Do not interrupt this process.
- Final Flush: Once "CLn" disappears, dump the vinegar solution. Fill the reservoir with fresh, filtered water. Run two standard ice-making cycles. Discard the first two batches of ice entirely, as they may contain residual vinegar or descaling chemicals.
If That Didn't Work
- Deep Scale Removal: If the "CLn" cycle didn't remove heavy white crusts, repeat the process using a stronger concentration of citric acid powder dissolved in warm water. Let the solution sit in the reservoir for 30 minutes before starting the self-clean cycle to allow the acid to penetrate the mineral layers.
- Clogged Dispenser Chute: If ice is jamming at the exit, use a pipe cleaner or a flexible plastic straw to gently clear debris from the chute. Do not use metal wire, as scratching the coating on the cooling pins can lead to premature rusting.
- Odors in the Plastic: If a musty smell persists, create a paste of baking soda and water. Apply it to the removable basket and the rubber gaskets around the reservoir. Let it sit for one hour before rinsing.
- Sensor Calibration: If the "Full" light stays on despite cleaning, take a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol and gently clean the infrared sensors located at the top of the ice chamber. Dust buildup here often mimics a full basket.

- Water Quality: Use filtered or bottled water whenever possible. Using hard tap water will necessitate the "CLn" cycle every two weeks, whereas filtered water can extend this to once every two months.
- Avoid Abrasives: Never use steel wool or scouring pads on the interior. The evaporator pins are coated; if you scratch that coating, the pins will oxidize and the ice will stop releasing.
- Airflow Matters: Keep the back of the unit at least 6 inches away from walls. Overheating causes the compressor to work harder, which can lead to faster mineral buildup due to higher evaporation rates.
- Dry Storage: If you are not using the machine for more than a week, empty the reservoir and run a "dry cycle" (running the machine without water for 5 minutes) to prevent mold growth in the internal lines.
