Quick answer: Grease on the heating element burns off during preheat, causing smoke and odor. It needs careful cleaning.

Diagnosis

Grease on the heating element burns off during preheat, causing smoke and odor. It needs careful cleaning.

How to Fix It

Unplug the unit and let it cool completely. Use a damp microfiber cloth or soft sponge. Gently wipe the exposed metal heating coil and the metal reflector plate around it. Do not scrub. For stuck-on grease, use a mild degreaser on the cloth, not directly on the element. Wipe dry.

If That Didn't Work

For heavy buildup, use a soft-bristle brush (like a clean paintbrush) to dislodge crumbs from the coil. You can also use a can of compressed air to blow debris out of the top chamber.

Heads Up

Never submerge the base in water. Never use abrasive pads or steel wool on the element. Do not bend the heating coil. Any damage to the coil can cause a short or fire.
