The blurriness you are experiencing during night vision is caused by light diffusion. The Nanit Pro camera utilizes an array of infrared (IR) LEDs surrounding the lens to illuminate the nursery in total darkness. When oils from fingerprints, household dust, or airborne particles accumulate on the exterior of the clear plastic lens cover, they create a physical barrier that scatters the IR light. Instead of the light reflecting off the baby and back into the sensor, it bounces off the smudges, creating a "halo" effect or a milky, out-of-focus haze. This issue is often exacerbated by the camera's position. Because the Nanit Pro is typically mounted high on a wall or ceiling, it is prone to collecting "settling dust" on the top of the lens dome. Furthermore, if the camera is placed near a humidifier or in a room with significant temperature swings, a micro-layer of condensation can form on the plastic, which attracts dust and creates a stubborn film that traditional air-dusting cannot remove. You can confirm this is a lens issue if the daytime image looks sharp but the night vision image is blurry.
How to Fix It
To restore clarity without scratching the sensitive plastic housing, follow these precise steps:
- Power down the camera by unplugging the power adapter from the wall outlet. This prevents any static buildup and ensures you aren't wiping a warm lens, which can cause streaks.
- Obtain a high-density, clean microfiber cloth (the kind used for eyeglasses or DSLR lenses). Avoid using paper towels, tissues, or old t-shirts, as these contain coarse fibers that can create permanent micro-scratches in the plastic dome.
- Gently wipe the lens cover using a light, circular motion. Start from the center of the lens and move outward toward the edges of the dome. Apply minimal pressure; the goal is to lift the oils, not scrub them into the plastic.
- If the smudge is stubborn (such as a greasy fingerprint), do not apply liquid cleaners, alcohol, or glass cleaner, as these can strip the anti-reflective coating or craze the plastic. Instead, exhale a warm breath onto the lens to create a light fog of moisture. Immediately wipe this moisture away with the dry microfiber cloth.
- Inspect the lens under a bright light. If you see any remaining streaks, flip the microfiber cloth to a clean section and repeat the circular motion.
- Plug the camera back in and test the night vision by covering the room's lights to trigger the IR LEDs.
If That Didn't Work
- Internal Condensation: If the blurriness persists and you see tiny droplets inside the lens housing, you have internal condensation. This happens when moisture is trapped during a temperature drop. Unplug the camera and move it to a dry, warm area (like a room with a dehumidifier) for 24-48 hours to allow the moisture to evaporate naturally.
- Micro-Scratch Refraction: If the lens was previously cleaned with a rough cloth, the plastic may be physically scratched. While you cannot "fix" the plastic, you can sometimes mitigate the glare by using a very small amount of specialized plastic polish (like Novus 1) on a cotton swab, though this should be a last resort as it removes a layer of material.
- IR LED Failure: If only one section of the image is blurry or there are "dark spots" in the night vision, one of the infrared LEDs may have burned out or shifted. This is a hardware failure; check the Nanit app for any "Camera Connection" or "Hardware Error" notifications.
- Firmware Calibration: In rare cases, the autofocus or image processing can glitch. Perform a hard reset by holding the reset button on the back of the camera for 10 seconds until the light flashes, then re-pair the device to the app to refresh the image processing settings.

- Avoid Chemicals: Never use Windex, isopropyl alcohol, or ammonia-based cleaners on the Nanit lens. These chemicals cause "crazing," which are thousands of tiny internal cracks that permanently ruin the image quality.
- Dust Prevention: If your nursery is prone to dust, use a can of compressed air to blow off the top of the camera once a week. This prevents dust from settling and bonding to the lens surface.
- Mounting Check: Ensure the camera is not pointed directly at a white wall or a reflective surface (like a mirror) within 3 feet. The IR light will bounce off the wall and create a "white-out" effect that looks like a blurry lens.
- Cloth Maintenance: Wash your microfiber cloth regularly. A dirty cloth simply moves oils around the lens and can introduce new particles that scratch the plastic.
