Diagnosis
The confusion stems from the DUMOS Ice Maker's integrated chassis design. Unlike some high-end refrigerators, the water reservoir in this 26lb daily capacity countertop model is a fixed internal basin. Attempting to force the reservoir out will warp the plastic housing or snap the internal water intake valves, leading to permanent leaks. The unit is designed to be cleaned via "chemical flushing," where the cleaning agent circulates through the pump and over the cooling pins. Over time, calcium and magnesium from tap water create "scale" (white flaky deposits) on the aluminum cooling pins. This buildup insulates the pins, making the machine work harder and slowing the freeze time from 6 minutes to 10 or more. If you see a cloudy film on the ice or notice the machine is louder than usual, you have mineral buildup that requires an acidic solution to dissolve.
How to Fix It
To thoroughly clean and descale the DUMOS Ice Maker without risking structural damage, follow this precise sequence:
- Drain the Unit: Unplug the machine from the wall. Use the provided ice scoop to remove any remaining ice cubes. Locate the drain plug at the bottom of the machine; remove it and tilt the unit forward to empty every drop of standing water from the reservoir.
- Prepare the Solution: Mix a solution of 2 cups of warm (not boiling) distilled water and 1 cup of white distilled vinegar. Alternatively, use a commercial citric acid-based descaler diluted to the manufacturer's specifications.
- Manual Scrub: Since the reservoir is fixed, use a long-handled bottle brush or a microfiber cloth wrapped around a chopstick to gently scrub the corners of the reservoir and the area around the ice-dropping mechanism. Do not use abrasive scouring pads, as they will scratch the coating on the cooling pins.
- The Flush Cycle: Pour the vinegar solution directly into the water reservoir. Plug the unit back in and press the "ON" button. Let the machine run a complete cycle—this means it should produce a full basket of "vinegar ice." This ensures the solution has passed through the internal pump and coated all cooling elements.
- Rinse Cycle: Discard the vinegar ice. Drain the reservoir again using the bottom plug. Fill the reservoir with fresh, filtered water and run 2-3 more full cycles. Discard this ice as well to ensure no vinegar taste remains.
- Final Dry: Wipe the exterior and the ice basket with a damp cloth and let the unit air dry for 30 minutes before returning it to regular service.
If That Didn't Work
- Stubborn Mineral Deposits: If white flakes remain on the cooling pins after a vinegar flush, use a diluted solution of citric acid (1 tablespoon per liter of water). Citric acid is more aggressive than vinegar and can break down heavy calcium carbonate buildup that vinegar cannot touch.
- Odors in the Plastic: If the machine smells like "old water," the issue is likely bacterial biofilm in the reservoir. Use a very dilute mixture of food-grade baking soda and water, run a cycle, and then perform a double-rinse with fresh water.
- Clogged Intake: If the machine is not pumping water despite being full, use a pipe cleaner or a thin flexible wire to gently clear the small intake hole at the bottom of the reservoir. Debris or slime can sometimes block the suction.
- Cloudy Ice: If the ice remains cloudy, it is often due to air bubbles or high mineral content in your water. Switch from tap water to distilled or reverse-osmosis (RO) water to eliminate the root cause of the scaling.
Heads Up
- Avoid Boiling Water: Never pour boiling water into the reservoir; the thermal shock can crack the plastic basin or damage the refrigerant seals. Use warm water (approx. 110°F / 43°C).
- Frequency: Perform this deep clean every 2-4 weeks if using tap water, or every 2 months if using filtered water, to prevent the pump from seizing.
- Drain Plug Maintenance: Always check that the rubber O-ring on the bottom drain plug is seated correctly. If it's pinched or missing, the unit will leak onto your countertop during operation.
- Storage: If you are not using the machine for more than a week, drain it completely and leave the lid open to prevent mold growth in the humid interior.
