Diagnosis
The persistent plastic taste or "chemical" smell in the DUMOS Ice Maker is typically caused by off-gassing from the internal food-grade plastic tubing and the reservoir lining. During the manufacturing process, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can become trapped in the porous surfaces of the plastic. When water first enters these lines, these compounds leach into the ice cubes. Because the DUMOS uses a bullet-cube design, the ice has a high surface-area-to-volume ratio, making it more susceptible to absorbing these odors. Furthermore, if the machine has been sitting idle, a biofilm can develop in the narrow internal conduits where the water is pumped from the reservoir to the freezing evaporator pins. Standard cleaning cycles often only flush the main reservoir and the basket, leaving the internal plumbing and the evaporator plate's crevices untouched. You can confirm this is a VOC/residue issue if the first few batches of ice taste significantly worse than the last few batches of a continuous run.
How to Fix It
To fully neutralize the plastic taste, you must perform a deep-saturation "seasoning" process using a neutralizing agent rather than just water.
- Complete Drain: Unplug the unit from the wall. Remove the ice basket and scoop. Tip the machine forward to drain every drop of stagnant water from the reservoir and the internal pump lines.
- Prepare the Neutralizing Solution: Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda into 1 gallon of warm (not boiling) distilled water. Stir until the powder is completely dissolved. Distilled water is critical here to prevent mineral scale from bonding with the plastic residues.
- Saturation Soak: Fill the reservoir to the MAX line with the baking soda solution. Leave the top lid open and let the solution sit undisturbed for 2 hours. This allows the alkaline solution to break down the acidic plastic residues.
- The Flush Cycle: Plug the machine in and run a full cycle. Once the 9 bullet cubes are formed, discard them immediately. Do not let them melt back into the reservoir.
- The Triple Rinse: Empty the reservoir completely. Fill it with fresh, filtered water. Run the machine for three consecutive full cycles, discarding the ice after each batch. This ensures all baking soda residue and loosened VOCs are purged from the pump and evaporator pins.
- Air Dry: Leave the unit unplugged with the lid open for 4 hours to allow any remaining moisture in the chassis to evaporate.
If That Didn't Work
- White Vinegar Shock Treatment: If baking soda fails, the residue may be alkaline. Mix a solution of 1 part white distilled vinegar to 3 parts warm water. Fill the reservoir and run two full cycles. The acetic acid breaks down different chemical bonds than baking soda. Follow this with two cycles of pure distilled water to remove the vinegar scent.
- Evaporator Pin Scrub: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush dipped in a mild dish soap solution to gently scrub the metal evaporator pins (the spikes where ice forms). Residue often clings to the base of these pins where the metal meets the plastic housing. Rinse thoroughly with a damp cloth.
- Carbon Filtration Upgrade: If the taste persists, the issue may actually be the chlorine or minerals in your tap water reacting with the plastic. Switch exclusively to a filtered water pitcher or bottled distilled water. The DUMOS is highly sensitive to "hard" water, which can trap plastic smells in calcium deposits.
- Deep Steam Clean: Use a handheld garment steamer to blast the interior of the reservoir and the area around the ice-drop chute. The high-temperature steam helps volatilize the remaining plastic odors, forcing them out of the material.
Heads Up
- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Never use bleach or strong detergents inside the DUMOS reservoir; these can degrade the seals and leave a permanent chemical taste that is impossible to remove.
- Daily Maintenance: To prevent the return of odors, empty the reservoir and wipe it with a clean cloth every 48 hours. Stagnant water is the primary cause of "off" tastes.
- Water Temperature: Use chilled water if possible. Colder water not only makes the ice freeze faster (reducing the 6-8 minute window) but also reduces the rate at which plastic compounds leach into the water.
- Storage Tip: If you aren't using the machine for more than three days, dry the reservoir completely and leave the lid ajar to prevent anaerobic bacteria from forming in the lines.
