The degradation in performance after adding a third MH7023 satellite is typically caused by "node congestion" or a "daisy-chain loop." In a WiFi 6 Mesh environment, the satellites use a dedicated wireless backhaul to communicate with the primary gateway. When you add a third node, if it is placed too far from the main router but close to another satellite, it may attempt to route its traffic through that second satellite rather than the main hub. This creates a multi-hop scenario where latency doubles and bandwidth is halved for every "hop" the data takes. Furthermore, if the third satellite is placed too close to an existing node, you create "co-channel interference." The MH7023 nodes will fight for the same airtime on the 5GHz band, causing the system to constantly shift channels or drop packets as the nodes compete to broadcast. You can confirm this by checking the Motorola WiFi app; if the new node shows a "Fair" or "Poor" connection signal, or if the "Network Map" shows the third node connected to a satellite instead of the main router, you have a topology failure.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must reset the topology to a "Star Configuration," where every satellite has a direct, unobstructed line of communication to the primary MH7023 router.
- Power down the newly added third satellite by unplugging the AC adapter.
- Open the Motorola WiFi app and navigate to the "Devices" or "Network Map" section. Identify the distance and signal strength of the existing two satellites.
- Relocate the third satellite. The ideal placement is roughly 25 to 35 feet away from the main router, with no more than two standard interior walls between them. Avoid placing the node inside a cabinet, behind a TV, or next to a microwave.
- Plug the third satellite back in. Wait 3-5 minutes for the LED indicator to turn solid white, signaling a successful handshake with the primary node.
- In the app, verify the "Backhaul Connection." Ensure the third node is listed as connected directly to the Main Router and not "via Satellite 2."
- Run a speed test from the app while standing next to the third node to ensure you are getting at least 60-70% of your ISP's rated speed.
If That Didn't Work
- Implement Ethernet Backhaul: If your home has Cat5e or Cat6 wiring, connect the third satellite to the main router using a physical Ethernet cable plugged into the LAN ports. This completely removes the wireless backhaul overhead, eliminating interference and providing the maximum possible throughput for the MH7023 system.
- Perform a Hard Factory Reset: Sometimes a node fails to optimize its channel selection during the initial handshake. Use a paperclip to hold the Reset button on the back of the third satellite for 10 seconds while powered on. Re-add the node through the app from scratch to force a fresh channel scan.
- Adjust Node Density: If you have a smaller home (under 2,000 sq ft), three nodes may actually be too many. Try removing the second satellite entirely and only using the third one in a different location. Over-saturation of the 5GHz band causes "sticky clients," where your phone stays connected to a distant node instead of switching to the closest one.
- Update Firmware Manually: Check the app for a firmware update. Early versions of the MH7023 firmware had bugs regarding the handoff protocol between three or more nodes, which caused the connection drops you are experiencing.
Heads Up
- Avoid placing nodes on metal surfaces or mirrored walls, as these reflect the 5GHz signal and create "dead zones" and multipath interference.
- Keep the nodes elevated (on a shelf or table) rather than on the floor to maximize the coverage radius of the internal antennas.
- Remember that mesh systems do not "increase" your internet speed; they only distribute the existing speed provided by your modem more evenly across the house.
- If you notice devices "sticking" to the wrong node, toggle the WiFi on your phone or laptop off and on again to force a re-scan for the strongest available MH7023 signal.
