When a battery casing is punctured, crushed, or suffers a catastrophic internal failure due to overheating, this fluid escapes. Exposure to this liquid is a chemical irritant. Upon contact with moisture (including the moisture on your skin or in the air), these electrolytes can react to form hydrofluoric acid in trace amounts, which can cause chemical burns, redness, and severe irritation. If you notice a sweet, solvent-like chemical smell accompanying the leak, it confirms the electrolyte has breached the sealed cell. You can confirm a leak by inspecting the plastic housing of the V20 pack for hairline cracks, bulging, or sticky residue around the gold-plated terminal contacts.
How to Fix It
Immediate decontamination is critical to prevent chemical absorption and skin burns. Follow these steps precisely:
- Immediate Irrigation: Place the affected skin under a stream of cool, running water immediately. Flush the area for at least 15 minutes. Do not use hot water, as this opens pores and can increase chemical absorption.
