The total absence of power—meaning no motor movement and no LED work light—indicates a complete break in the electrical circuit between the battery cells and the trigger switch. While a dead battery is the most obvious culprit, the Craftsman V20 system often suffers from "terminal oxidation" or "contact creep," where the metal plates on the battery or the internal pins of the drill handle lose their tension or develop a thin layer of non-conductive debris. If the battery is fully charged but the light remains off, the issue is likely a failure in the trigger assembly or a blown internal thermal fuse. To confirm the root cause, check the battery's onboard fuel gauge by pressing the button on the pack. If the lights on the battery illuminate but the drill remains dead, you have a connection or switch failure. If the battery gauge is dark, the battery has entered a "deep discharge" state or a cell has failed, preventing the drill from receiving any voltage. In some cases, the V20 battery latch may be slightly misaligned, preventing the terminals from seating deeply enough to make contact with the drill's internal copper rails.
How to Fix It
Follow these precise steps to restore power to your V20 drill:
- Press the battery release button firmly and slide the battery pack out of the handle.
- Inspect the three gold-plated contact pads on the battery and the corresponding spring-loaded pins inside the drill housing. Look for "arc marks" (small black pits) or a dull grey film of oxidation.
- Use a cotton swab dipped in 90% Isopropyl Alcohol to clean the battery terminals. Avoid using water, as this can cause corrosion on the internal circuitry.
- Inspect the battery latch mechanism. Ensure the plastic locking tab is not bent or obstructed by sawdust or drywall mud, which prevents the battery from clicking fully into the "locked" position.
- Insert the battery and apply firm pressure until you hear a distinct, audible "click." Give the battery a slight shake; if it wobbles significantly, it is not making a secure electrical connection.
- Cycle the trigger switch from Forward to Reverse and back to Forward. This clears any debris from the directional selector switch that may be interrupting the circuit.
- Pull the trigger in short, quick bursts to see if the motor "kicks," which indicates a partial connection.
If That Didn't Work
- Test with a Known-Good Pack: The V20 platform uses the same battery across all tools. Insert a battery from a V20 blower or flashlight. If the drill works, your original battery has a failed internal Battery Management System (BMS) and needs replacement.
- Check for a Blown Thermal Fuse: If the drill was used heavily just before it died, the internal thermal fuse may have tripped. Let the tool sit in a cool environment for 60 minutes. - Inspect the Trigger Switch: If you have a multimeter, set it to DC Voltage and probe the internal terminals while pulling the trigger. If the battery is providing 20V but the motor isn't receiving it, the trigger switch (part of the trigger assembly) has failed and must be replaced.
- Battery "Wake Up" Charge: If the battery fuel gauge is dead, place it on the V20 charger. If the charger flashes a red "Error" light immediately, the voltage has dropped below the minimum threshold. You may need to leave it on the charger for 24 hours to see if the trickle charge can recover a cell.

- Never store your V20 batteries in freezing temperatures (like an unheated garage in winter), as this causes permanent capacity loss and can lead to the "dead battery" symptom you are experiencing.

- Periodically blow out the battery cavity with compressed air to prevent metal shavings from the drill's internal gears from migrating into the electrical contacts.
