This occurs when the NutriU app successfully sends a command packet to the appliance, but the air fryer's internal Wi-Fi module fails to acknowledge the receipt of that data within the required millisecond window. Essentially, the app thinks the machine is listening, but the machine's processor has stalled or dropped the connection mid-transfer. This is most common when using custom recipes because these packets contain multiple variable sets (temperature changes, shaking reminders, and timing intervals) rather than a single static setting. If there is a momentary dip in 2.4GHz signal strength or a conflict with the DHCP lease on your router, the HD9280 will trigger E15 as a safety mechanism to prevent the machine from running a partial or corrupted program that could lead to overheating or undercooking. You can confirm this is a connectivity issue if the machine functions perfectly using the manual dial but throws the error the moment a "Start Recipe" command is triggered from your smartphone.
How to Fix It
To clear the E15 state and restore the link between the NutriU app and your HD9280, follow this precise sequence to reset the network handshake:
- Power down the air fryer completely by unplugging it from the wall outlet. Do not simply use the power button; a full hard reset of the internal capacitor is required. Leave it unplugged for exactly 60 seconds.
- While the unit is unplugged, force-close the NutriU app on your smartphone. Swipe it away from your recent apps list to kill the background process.
- Plug the air fryer back into the wall outlet. Wait for the display to initialize and the Wi-Fi icon to stop blinking and remain solid.
- Open the NutriU app and navigate to the "My Appliances" section. Verify that the HD9280 is listed as "Online."
- Select your custom recipe, but before hitting "Start," ensure your phone is connected to the 2.4GHz band of your Wi-Fi (the HD9280 does not support 5GHz bands and will often throw E15 if the phone jumps to 5GHz during a transfer).
- Press "Start Recipe" once. Do not tap the button multiple times, as this sends overlapping packets that can trigger the error again.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Factory Network Reset: Press and hold the power button and the temperature decrease button simultaneously for 5 seconds (or follow the specific button combination for your regional firmware version) until the Wi-Fi symbol flashes rapidly. This wipes the cached SSID and password, allowing you to pair the device as if it were brand new.
- Change your Router Channel: If you have a high-density Wi-Fi environment (many neighbors), the 2.4GHz channel may be congested. Log into your router settings and switch the 2.4GHz channel from "Auto" to a static channel, preferably 1, 6, or 11. This reduces packet loss that leads to E15.
- Disable "Smart Connect" or "Band Steering": Many modern routers combine 2.4GHz and 5GHz into one SSID. The HD9280 often struggles with this. Create a separate Guest Network that is strictly 2.4GHz and connect both your phone and the air fryer to that specific network.
- Update the Firmware: Check the NutriU app for a firmware update notification. Philips frequently releases patches for the HD9280 to improve the stability of the Wi-Fi module and resolve timeout errors during recipe transfers.

- Avoid placing the air fryer directly against a wall or inside a pantry during use, as the metal chassis can shield the Wi-Fi antenna, weakening the signal and increasing the likelihood of E15 errors.
- Always ensure the basket is fully pushed in before sending a recipe from the app; if the safety switch is triggered mid-transfer, the machine will reject the command and throw a communication error.
- Keep your router within 15-20 feet of the appliance. While 2.4GHz has a long range, the small antenna in the HD9280 is not powerful enough to maintain a stable "recipe stream" through multiple thick walls.
- If you notice the E15 error appearing alongside a flickering display, it may indicate a power surge issue. Using a high-quality surge protector can prevent voltage drops that cause the Wi-Fi module to reboot.
