In a healthy cycle, the water pump pushes a specific volume of water into the aluminum freezing pins. If the cycle is cut short or the flow is restricted, the water only coats the exterior of the pins and the walls of the mold. As the refrigeration cycle kicks in, this thin layer freezes rapidly, creating a hard outer shell while leaving a void of air in the center. This issue is typically triggered by one of two things: an incorrect size setting on the control panel or a physical restriction in the water delivery system. When the machine is set to "Small," it intentionally reduces the water volume, but if the water flow is sluggish due to mineral buildup (limescale), even the "Large" setting will result in hollow cubes. You can confirm this by listening to the pump during the filling phase; if you hear a straining sound or if the water level in the reservoir doesn't visibly drop during the fill, you have a flow restriction rather than a setting error.
How to Fix It
To resolve hollow ice cubes, follow these precise steps to recalibrate the machine and clear the internal lines:
