The Antarctic Star AZ-I11A is failing to produce ice because the water is not reaching the evaporator pins, or the refrigerant cycle is failing to drop the temperature below the freezing point. In most cases, the machine "runs" because the fan and compressor are operational, but the internal peristaltic pump—the small motor that squeezes a silicone tube to push water—has either failed, become air-locked, or is blocked by mineral scale. You can confirm a pump failure by listening closely to the unit during the "filling" phase of the cycle. If you hear the motor humming but see no water moving into the freezing tray, the pump is likely malfunctioning. Alternatively, if you see water sitting in the reservoir at the bottom of the machine but the evaporator pins remain dry, the pump is not creating enough pressure to push the water upward. If the pins are wet but the water never freezes despite the compressor running for 20+ minutes, you have a refrigerant leak or a failed compressor, which is generally non-repairable.
How to Fix It
To resolve a water delivery failure, you must clear any air locks and ensure the pump's tubing is unobstructed. Follow these steps exactly:
- Unplug the AZ-I11A from the wall outlet to prevent electrical shock.
- Empty the ice basket and remove the water reservoir from the bottom of the unit.
- Inspect the clear silicone tubing that connects the reservoir to the internal pump. Check for any kinks, pinches, or white calcium buildup inside the tube. If the tube is pinched, gently straighten it.
- Fill the reservoir with distilled water and a teaspoon of white vinegar. This helps dissolve any mineral deposits that may be clogging the narrow pump aperture.
- Reinsert the reservoir and plug the unit back in.
- Press the "ON/OFF" button and immediately press the "SELECT" button to cycle through the ice sizes.
- While the machine is attempting to fill, gently tilt the entire unit 15 degrees to the left and then to the right. This action helps "burp" air bubbles trapped in the pump head that prevent the peristaltic rollers from grabbing the water.
- Wait for two full cycles (approximately 20 minutes) to see if the evaporator pins begin to frost over.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Deep Descale: If you have hard water, the internal pump valves may be seized. Mix a 50/50 solution of warm water and white vinegar. Pour it into the reservoir and let it sit for 4 hours without powering the machine on. This breaks down the calcium carbonate shells that often block the AZ-I11A's small water channels.
- Check the Sensor Probe: The unit uses a sensor to detect when the basket is full. If the "ICE FULL" light is flickering or on, the machine will run the fan but will not trigger the pump to move water. Ensure the infrared sensor on the underside of the lid is clean and free of ice shards or debris.
- Test the Compressor Heat: Touch the side of the machine. If the exterior feels lukewarm but the evaporator pins are not freezing, the compressor is likely running but the refrigerant gas has leaked. If the compressor is ice-cold or vibrating violently, the internal start capacitor has failed.
- Manual Pump Prime: If you are comfortable removing the outer casing, locate the peristaltic pump. Use a small pipette or syringe to manually force water into the intake tube to prime the pump, bypassing the air lock that the tilting method may have missed.

- Always use distilled or filtered water. The AZ-I11A is highly susceptible to scale buildup, which is the primary cause of pump failure and "empty basket" syndrome.
- Avoid placing the unit in a room hotter than 90°F (32°C). The condenser coils on the side of the unit need airflow to dump heat; if the room is too hot, the refrigerant cannot condense, and ice will never form.
- Clean the internal reservoir every 2 weeks using a soft brush and mild soap to prevent biofilm from clogging the intake filter.
- Never force the "SELECT" button rapidly; allow the machine to complete a full cycle before changing ice size settings to avoid glitching the control board.
