The "Add Water" error on the GE Profile Opal 2.0, despite a full reservoir, is almost always caused by a failure in the magnetic float assembly. This system uses a buoyant plastic float containing a small magnet that slides up and down a guide rail. When the water reaches a specific height, the magnet triggers a reed switch located in the housing; if the float is stuck in the "down" position, the machine believes the tank is empty and halts production to prevent the pump from running dry.
This failure is typically caused by "scaling"—the buildup of calcium and magnesium deposits from hard water. These minerals create a gritty, sandpaper-like crust on the guide rail, increasing friction until the float can no longer rise freely. In some cases, a small piece of debris or a biofilm slime layer can physically wedge the float in place. You can confirm this by looking at the float while the tank is full; if the float is sitting at the bottom or halfway up the rail instead of resting on the water's surface, the sensor is malfunctioning.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must clear the mechanical obstruction and descale the sensor track. Follow these exact steps:
- Power down the unit and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet to ensure the pump does not engage during the process.
- Remove the water reservoir from the machine. Set it aside and locate the float assembly—this is the small black plastic cylinder housed within a vertical track on the side of the reservoir docking area.
- Using your finger or a plastic probe, gently push the float down and let it pop back up. If you feel any resistance or if the float moves sluggishly, it is obstructed by mineral scale.
- Fill a small bowl with a 50/50 mixture of white distilled vinegar and warm water. Dip a cotton swab or a soft-bristled toothbrush into the solution and scrub the interior of the vertical guide rail thoroughly.
- Manually slide the float up and down the rail 10 to 15 times while applying the vinegar solution. This breaks the mineral bond and lubricates the track.
- Rinse the area with fresh water and wipe it dry with a lint-free microfiber cloth.
- Refill the reservoir to the "Max" fill line, slide it firmly back into the docking station, and plug the unit back in.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Deep Descale Cycle: If the float is moving but the error persists, the internal sensors may be coated in scale. Fill the reservoir with a commercial descaling solution or a high-concentration citric acid mix. Run the machine through a full cycle, allowing the solution to sit in the internal lines for 30 minutes before flushing with fresh water.
- Check the Reservoir Seating: Ensure the tank is pushed completely flush against the back of the machine. If the tank is tilted even slightly, the float may not align correctly with the reed switch in the chassis, triggering a false "empty" reading.
- Inspect for Magnet Displacement: In rare cases, the internal magnet within the float can shift. Gently shake the float; if you hear a rattling sound, the magnet has detached, and the float assembly (Part #GE-OPAL-FLOAT) will need to be replaced.
- Hard Reset: Unplug the unit for a full 10 minutes to clear the control board's volatile memory. This can occasionally clear a "ghost" error message that persists even after the physical problem is fixed.

- Use Filtered Water: To prevent future float failures, use distilled or filtered water. Tap water with high mineral content will cause the float to seize every 3-6 months.
- Weekly Rinse: Every Sunday, wipe the float rail with a damp cloth to prevent mineral buildup before it hardens into scale.
