You can confirm this is a maintenance alert rather than a mechanical failure if the machine is otherwise powered on and the reservoir is full of water. If the light flashes immediately upon plugging in the unit—even after a fresh fill—the logic board is demanding a descaling cycle before it will allow the cooling system to engage. If you ignore this alert, the machine will not restart ice production regardless of how many times you power cycle the unit.
How to Fix It
To clear the error and resume ice production, you must complete a full automated cleaning cycle. Follow these exact steps:
- Empty all existing ice from the basket and remove any leftover water from the reservoir.
- Fill the reservoir to the "Max" line with a mixture of warm water and a citric acid-based descaler. Use the GE Profile Opal cleaning solution or a high-quality citric acid powder dissolved in water. Avoid using white vinegar, as the acetic acid can degrade the internal seals and may not effectively remove calcium carbonate deposits.
- Press and hold the "Clean" button for exactly 3 to 5 seconds. You will hear a chime, and the machine will begin the cleaning process.
