Diagnosis
The loud grinding or buzzing noise occurs because the motor-driven ejector pins are attempting to push the ice cubes out of the evaporator mold, but one or more cubes have "bridged" or frozen firmly to the metal grid. This creates a mechanical jam where the gear motor is straining against a solid block of ice, causing the characteristic buzzing sound of a motor under high torque load. This typically happens due to a few specific reasons: the water level is too high, causing the ice to freeze over the top of the mold; the unit is not perfectly level, allowing water to pool on one side and create a "mega-cube" that locks the others in place; or the unit has been sitting idle for too long, allowing a thin layer of frost to bond the ice to the metal. You can confirm this by opening the lid during the noise; if you see the ejector pins vibrating or twitching without the ice falling, you have a mechanical blockage.
How to Fix It
To resolve this jam and prevent motor burnout, follow these exact steps:
- Immediately unplug the MCIM22ST from the wall outlet. Attempting to let the motor "force" the ice out can strip the plastic gears in the drive assembly.
- Remove the lid and the ice basket to get a clear view of the evaporator plate (the silver grid).
- Identify the stuck cube. If the ice is frozen in a solid sheet, do not attempt to pry it out with force. Instead, use a spray bottle with lukewarm water or a damp cloth to gently melt the edges of the stuck cube where it meets the metal.
- Using a plastic or nylon utensil—such as a plastic butter knife or a silicone spatula—gently nudge the stuck cube from the side. Avoid pushing directly down on the ejector pins, as these are fragile.
- Once the stuck cube is freed, use the utensil to clear any remaining shards of ice from the tracks of the ejector pins.
- Wipe the interior of the mold dry with a lint-free cloth to remove excess moisture that could cause immediate re-freezing.
- Plug the unit back in and press the "Reset" or "Power" button to restart the cycle.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Full Defrost: If the grinding persists, there may be ice buildup behind the evaporator plate where you cannot see it. Unplug the unit and leave it open for 4 to 6 hours. This allows the internal cooling coils to fully thaw, clearing any hidden ice bridges that are obstructing the pin movement.
- Check the Leveling: Place a bubble level on top of the machine. If the unit is tilted forward or to the side, the water distribution is uneven. Adjust the surface or the machine's position so it is perfectly flat. An uneven machine is the primary cause of "over-sized" cubes that jam the ejector.
- Inspect for Scale Buildup: If you have hard water, calcium deposits can build up on the ejector pins, increasing friction. Fill the reservoir with a solution of 50% white vinegar and 50% warm water. Let it sit for 30 minutes, then run a full cycle of "cleaning" (dumping the ice) to lubricate the pins.
- Verify Water Temperature: If you are using extremely cold filtered water, the ice may freeze too quickly and unevenly. Try using room-temperature water to ensure a more consistent freeze and smoother ejection.
Heads Up
- NEVER use metal tools: Using a metal screwdriver or knife to chip ice out of the mold will scratch the Teflon-like coating on the evaporator. Once scratched, ice will bond to the metal even more aggressively, making this problem a permanent occurrence.
- Avoid Overfilling: Ensure the water level stays below the "MAX" line. Overfilling causes water to seep into the mechanism, which freezes and jams the gears.
- Empty the Basket Frequently: If the ice basket is too full, the falling cubes will pile up and push back against the ejector pins, creating a "back-pressure" jam that sounds exactly like a motor failure.
- Power Cycle After Jams: Always unplug the unit for at least 30 seconds after a jam occurs. This resets the internal timer and prevents the machine from entering a permanent error state.
