Diagnosis
No. A mild 'new appliance' smell from the exterior is possible. A strong burning plastic smell from the vents indicates a problem.
How to Fix It
Unplug immediately. The issue is often a protective film or sticker left on during manufacturing. Check the entire exterior, especially the back and bottom, for a clear plastic film or a white sticker. Peel it off. Also, remove the basket and pan and check for any plastic packaging material inside the cooking chamber.
If That Didn't Work
The smell could be from the internal wiring insulation touching the heating element. Do not use the unit. This is a defect. You must contact Chefman for a replacement.
Heads Up
Always run the air fryer empty at 400°F for 10 minutes before first cooking. Do this outside or under a vent hood. This burns off any manufacturing oils. If the smell persists, stop.
