it won't print from my computer anymore, just says 'error' on the printer screen.

DIAGNOSIS A generic 'Error' state with no specific code usually indicates a communication failure, corrupted print job stuck in queue, or driver conflict.

FIX Clear all print jobs. On Windows, open Services, stop the 'Print Spooler' service, navigate to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and delete all files, then restart the Print Spooler service. Restart the printer.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Reinstall the driver using the latest full software package from Brother's support site. During installation, select 'New Connection' and 'Network,' letting the setup utility rediscover the printer. Do not use Windows Update drivers.

HEADS UP For USB connections, always use the cable that came with the printer. Aftermarket cables can cause communication errors that manifest as a front-panel 'Error'.
