The Brother HL-L2350DW is a legacy-architecture device that only supports 2.4GHz wireless bands. If your router is configured for "Smart Connect" or "Band Steering" (where 2.4GHz and 5GHz share the same SSID), the printer often fails to handshake with the router because it cannot interpret the 5GHz signal, causing the network search to time out or return a "Connection Failed" error. Additionally, this model struggles with WPA3 security protocols. If your modern router is set to WPA3-only mode, the HL-L2350DW will be unable to see the network entirely, as it requires WPA2-PSK (AES) to establish a secure link. You can confirm this by checking if other older 2.4GHz devices (like smart plugs or old tablets) are also struggling to connect to your current network settings. Finally, signal interference from physical barriers or distance can cause the printer's small internal antenna to miss the beacon frames from the router. If the printer is tucked inside a cabinet or placed behind a metal desk, the signal-to-noise ratio may be too low to complete the initial discovery phase of the setup process.
How to Fix It
To resolve the connection failure, bypass the automated search and force a direct handshake using the WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) method or a manual network split. Follow these exact steps:
- Power cycle your printer by turning it off and unplugging it from the wall for 30 seconds to clear the volatile memory.
- Access your router's admin panel via a web browser (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) and ensure the 2.4GHz band is enabled. If "Smart Connect" is on, temporarily disable it to give the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands different names (e.g., "HomeNetwork_2G" and "HomeNetwork_5G").
- Set the security mode specifically to "WPA2-PSK (AES)" rather than "WPA3" or "WPA/WPA2 Mixed."
- On the printer's control panel, press the Wi-Fi button. When the Wi-Fi LED begins to flash rapidly, it is in discovery mode.
- Within two minutes, go to your router and press the WPS button (usually a small button on the back or side) and hold it for 3-5 seconds.
- Return to the printer. The Wi-Fi LED will continue to flash for about 60 seconds while the handshake occurs. Once the LED stops flashing and remains solid green, the connection is established.
- Print a Network Configuration page by pressing the Go button three times quickly to verify the IP address is assigned.
If That Didn't Work
- Use a USB-to-Wireless Bridge: Connect the printer to a laptop via a USB-A to USB-B cable. Download the "Full Driver & Software Package" from the Brother support site. During installation, select "Wireless Network Connection" and choose "Wireless Setup." This allows the laptop to "push" the Wi-Fi credentials directly into the printer's firmware, bypassing the need for the printer to search for the network on its own.
- Assign a Static IP: If the printer connects but then disappears from the network, log into the printer's web interface (using the IP address found on the Network Configuration page) and change the IP setting from "Boot Auto Refresh" to "Static." Assign an address outside your DHCP range (e.g., 192.168.1.200) to prevent IP conflicts.
- Change the Wireless Channel: In your router settings, change the 2.4GHz channel from "Auto" to a fixed channel, specifically 1, 6, or 11. Brother printers often struggle with "Auto" channel hopping or channels above 11 (like channel 13 in some regions).
- Reset Network Settings: Perform a hard network reset on the printer. Press the Go button until the "Ready" light flashes, then navigate the menu to "Network" > "Network Reset" > "Yes." This clears any corrupted cached credentials that might be blocking a new connection.

- Avoid placing the printer directly on top of a microwave or next to a cordless phone base, as these emit 2.4GHz interference that will drop your connection.
- If you change your router or Wi-Fi password, the printer will not update automatically; you must repeat the WPS or USB setup process.
