Diagnosis
The core issue stems from an architecture mismatch. The Brother Work Smart 1360 relies on traditional x86 or x64 drivers for full functionality. Windows 11 on ARM (found in devices like the Surface Pro 9 5G or newer Snapdragon-powered laptops) uses a different processor architecture. While Windows 11 ARM has an emulation layer for apps, it cannot emulate kernel-mode drivers. This means the standard .exe driver installers provided on Brother's website will either fail to launch or throw a "compatible driver not found" error during the installation process. Because the printer cannot communicate via a native ARM driver, the laptop cannot "see" the specific feature set of the 1360 (like precise ink levels or advanced scanning profiles) through the standard USB or Network handshake. To confirm this, check your Device Manager; if the printer appears as "Generic Microsoft IP Device" or shows a yellow exclamation mark under "Unknown Devices," the system is failing to map the hardware to a compatible ARM-based instruction set.
How to Fix It
To get the Brother 1360 operational on Windows 11 ARM, you must bypass the traditional driver installation and utilize the Mopria-standardized communication layer and the Brother Print Support App.
- Connect the Brother 1360 to your Wi-Fi network using the printer's onboard control panel. Ensure the laptop is on the same SSID (e.g., both on the 2.4GHz band, as some ARM laptops struggle with 5GHz/2.4GHz handoffs to printers).
- On your Windows 11 laptop, navigate to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Click the Add device button. Wait for the system to scan. When the "Brother 1360 Series" appears, select Add device. Windows will now install a "Class Driver," which is a generic ARM-compatible driver that allows basic printing.
- Open the Microsoft Store and search for the Brother Print Support App. Download and install this application. This app acts as the bridge, providing the interface for ink levels and maintenance that the generic driver lacks.
- Launch the app and select your printer from the dropdown menu. The app will perform a handshake with the printer over the network to synchronize settings.
- Perform a test print by opening a document, pressing Ctrl+P, and ensuring the "Brother 1360" is selected as the active printer.
If That Didn't Work
- Use the Brother iPrint&Scan App: If the Print Support App fails to detect the hardware, download the iPrint&Scan utility. This application uses a different communication protocol (IPP) that often bypasses the need for a local kernel driver, allowing you to trigger scans and prints directly via the network.
- Switch to USB Connection: If wireless discovery fails, connect a USB-B to USB-A cable. Go to Device Manager, right-click the "Unknown Device," select Update Driver, and choose Search automatically for drivers. Windows Update often hosts a stripped-down ARM-compatible INF file that the Brother website does not provide.
- Configure via Web Interface: Type the printer's IP address (found in the Network Configuration report) into your web browser. This opens the Web Based Management (WBM) tool. From here, you can manage ink settings and printer configurations without needing any software installed on the ARM laptop.
- Check for Windows Update Optional Updates: Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates. Often, the ARM-compatible driver for Brother peripherals is listed here under "Driver Updates" rather than being pushed automatically.
Heads Up
- Avoid Third-Party "Driver Packs": Never download "Driver Booster" or unofficial ARM driver packs. These often contain malware or incompatible x86 wrappers that can cause Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) errors on ARM systems.
- Scanning Limitations: Be aware that advanced TWAIN scanning features may not work on ARM. Use the "Windows Scan" app from the Microsoft Store for the most stable experience.
- Firmware Updates: Periodically check the printer's onboard menu for firmware updates. Newer firmware often improves Mopria compatibility, making it easier for ARM devices to discover the printer.
- Power Management: On ARM laptops, "Battery Saver" mode can sometimes kill the background network polling required to find the printer. Switch to "Best Performance" mode when troubleshooting the connection.
