keeps saying 'Ink Tank Full' and won't let me print, but the tanks look fine?

Diagnosis

The "Ink Tank Full" error on the Brother MFC-J4535DW is a misleadingly phrased message. It does not refer to your actual ink cartridges or the ink levels you see on the display. Instead, this is a "Waste Ink Pad" error. Inside the chassis, there is a series of highly absorbent felt pads designed to soak up ink during head cleaning cycles and nozzle purging. To prevent ink from leaking out of the bottom of the machine and onto your furniture, Brother implements a digital counter that tracks every drop of ink sent to these pads.

Once the internal counter reaches a specific threshold (the "end of life" limit), the firmware triggers a hard lock on the printer to prevent an overflow. This is why the printer refuses to print even if you have brand new cartridges installed.
