The presence of a high TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) reading on the "OUT" side of your Bluevua RO100ROPOT—specifically readings exceeding 100 ppm when you expect near-zero—is most often caused by a phenomenon known as "TDS Creep." This occurs when the system remains idle for several hours. During downtime, the osmotic pressure gradient causes dissolved solids to migrate across the RO membrane from the concentrated side to the purified side, effectively "contaminating" the stagnant water sitting in the internal lines and the storage tank. Another common cause is the accumulation of concentrated brine in the tank. Because the RO100ROPOT is a countertop unit that recycles water to minimize waste, if the system has been running multiple cycles without a full tank refresh, the "source" water entering the membrane becomes increasingly saturated with minerals. This increases the osmotic pressure, making it harder for the membrane to reject contaminants, which results in a higher TDS reading on the output screen. You can confirm this by running the unit for 2-3 minutes; if the TDS reading steadily drops as the water flows, it is a creep issue. If it remains high, it is a membrane saturation or failure issue.
How to Fix It
To reset the system and clear the concentrated minerals from the internal pathways, follow these precise steps:
- Complete Tank Purge: Empty the water tank entirely. Do not simply top it off. Ensure all remaining water, which contains the highest concentration of rejected minerals, is discarded.
- Fresh Water Load: Refill the tank with fresh tap water exactly to the MAX fill line. Using distilled water for this process is not recommended as it may trigger low-water sensor errors.
- Manual Backflush Sequence: With the unit powered on, locate the "Water Volume" button and the "Water-Making" button. Press and hold both buttons simultaneously for exactly 60 seconds. This forces a reverse flow that clears the membrane surface of accumulated particulates.
- System Flush: Initiate a standard filtration cycle. Allow the unit to run for at least 2 to 5 minutes without stopping. Monitor the OUT TDS reading on the LED display; you should see the number gradually decrease as the "creep" water is flushed out and replaced by freshly filtered water.
- Calibration Check: Once the flow stabilizes, record the TDS. For most municipal water sources, a healthy OUT reading should be between 0 and 20 ppm.
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the RO Membrane: If the TDS remains above 100 ppm after a full flush and backflush, the semi-permeable membrane has likely reached its end-of-life or suffered a "breakthrough" (a physical tear in the membrane). Replace the RO membrane filter element. Ensure the O-rings are lubricated with a tiny amount of food-grade silicone grease to prevent leaks.
- Check for Air Locks: Air bubbles trapped in the membrane housing can cause uneven pressure, allowing more minerals to pass through. Tilt the unit slightly while it is running or gently shake the tank to dislodge air pockets that may be bypassing the filtration stages.
- Inspect the Pre-Filters: If the sediment or carbon pre-filters are completely clogged, the water pressure hitting the RO membrane is too low to overcome the osmotic pressure. This results in poor rejection rates. Replace the pre-filter set if they appear dark brown or grey.
- Verify Source Water TDS: Use a handheld TDS meter to test your tap water. If your source water is exceptionally high (over 500-800 ppm), the RO100ROPOT may struggle to reach near-zero readings due to the sheer volume of minerals, and a higher "OUT" reading may actually be normal for your specific geography.

- Avoid Long Idle Periods: If you won't use the machine for more than 24 hours, run a quick 1-minute flush before drinking to clear TDS creep.
- Tank Maintenance: Clean the water tank with a mild vinegar solution once a month to prevent biofilm buildup, which can interfere with sensor accuracy.
- Avoid Direct Sunlight: Keep the unit away from windows; heat can degrade the RO membrane and encourage algae growth in the tank, which can skew TDS readings.
- Filter Timing: Do not ignore the filter replacement alerts. Running a system with expired filters puts undue stress on the RO membrane, shortening its lifespan significantly.
