The Breville Bambino Plus (BES500BSS) is engineered with a safety interlocking mechanism that prevents the heating element and pump from engaging if the water reservoir is not fully engaged or if the water level is critically low. Unlike traditional appliances, the "power on" state is dependent on a physical float switch and a magnetic sensor located at the base of the water tank. If the tank is skewed by even a millimeter or if the float is stuck, the circuit remains open, leaving the 1 CUP, 2 CUP, and STEAM buttons completely dark.
Another common cause for a total blackout is a tripped internal thermal fuse or a faulty power cord connection. Because this machine uses a high-wattage thermoblock heater, sudden power surges or overheating during a long steaming session can trigger a safety cutoff. To confirm if it is a tank issue, you should observe the tank's seating; if there is a slight gap between the tank and the machine's chassis, the sensor is not triggered. If the tank is full and flush but the buttons remain dark, the issue is likely electrical or related to the internal power supply.
How to Fix It
Follow these precise steps to reset the power sequence and ensure the water system is engaged:
- Unplug the BES500BSS from the wall outlet for exactly 60 seconds to discharge any residual electricity in the capacitors.
- Remove the water tank entirely. Check the bottom of the tank for any debris or coffee grounds that may be obstructing the valve.
- Inspect the float (the small plastic piece inside the tank). Gently shake the tank to ensure the float moves freely up and down; if it is stuck at the bottom, the machine thinks it is empty.
- Fill the reservoir with filtered water exactly to the MAX line. Do not overfill, as this can cause air pockets in the intake.
- Slide the tank back into the machine with a firm, downward motion. Ensure the tank sits perfectly flush against the rear of the unit. You should feel a distinct "click" or a firm seat.
- Plug the machine back into a dedicated wall outlet (avoid using a surge protector or extension cord for this test, as the Bambino Plus requires high amperage that some power strips cannot provide).
- Observe the buttons. If the 1 CUP, 2 CUP, and STEAM buttons illuminate, the connection is restored.
If That Didn't Work
- Hard Reset the Power Cycle: If the buttons remain dark, try toggling the power switch (if applicable to your specific regional variant) or unplugging the machine and holding the STEAM button for 10 seconds while unplugged to drain the board, then plugging it back in.
- Check the GFCI Outlet: The Bambino Plus draws significant power. If you are plugged into a GFCI outlet (the ones with the Reset/Test buttons), the outlet may have tripped. Press the "Reset" button on the wall outlet to restore power to the socket.
- Inspect the Power Cord: Examine the power cable for any kinks or frays. Ensure the plug is pushed completely into the socket; sometimes the heavy gauge wire of the BES500BSS can pull the plug slightly out of the wall.
- Internal Thermal Fuse Failure: If the machine was used heavily for steaming right before it died, the internal thermal fuse may have blown. This requires a technician to test the continuity of the fuse using a multimeter. If the fuse is blown, the machine will not receive power regardless of the water tank status.

- Avoid Distilled Water: Never use pure distilled water in the Bambino Plus. The sensors rely on the conductivity and weight of the water; distilled water can sometimes cause the float to behave erratically or lead to premature scaling of the thermoblock.
- Scale Buildup: If you live in a hard water area, mineral buildup can jam the float switch in the "down" position. Perform a descale cycle every 2-3 months using a commercial descaling powder or a 50/50 white vinegar solution.
- Tank Alignment: Always ensure the tank is pushed straight down. Forcing the tank at an angle can damage the silicone O-ring at the base, leading to slow leaks and intermittent power loss.
