Diagnosis
When a Briggs & Stratton S2200 engine runs smoothly but the pump fails to deliver water, you are dealing with a loss of prime. The pump is a positive displacement type that cannot move air; it can only move liquid. If an air pocket (airlock) forms inside the pump head or the intake manifold, the pistons will simply compress the air rather than drawing water from the source. This frequently happens after the unit has sat for a few weeks, if the garden hose was disconnected, or if the unit was tilted during transport. You can confirm this by checking the pump housing for heat. If the pump is getting hot to the touch while the engine is running but no water is flowing, the internal seals are churning air and friction is building up. Another indicator is a "pulsing" sound from the pump head without any actual water discharge from the nozzle. If the trigger pulls with zero resistance and no water emerges, the pump is completely dry and unable to create the vacuum necessary to pull water from your hose.
How to Fix It
To resolve an airlock and re-prime the S2200 pump, follow these precise steps to force air out of the system:
- Shut down the engine completely and ensure the fuel valve is closed if applicable.
- Connect a high-flow, leak-free garden hose to the water inlet. Ensure the hose is fully uncoiled and there are no kinks.
- Turn the water supply on fully. Do not partially open the valve; the pump requires maximum static pressure to purge air.
- Squeeze and hold the trigger of the spray gun. Keep it held down throughout the next few steps.
- While holding the trigger, slowly pull the recoil starter cord 3 to 5 times. You are not trying to start the engine; you are using the crankshaft to rotate the pump pistons and push the trapped air out through the nozzle.
- Wait until you see a steady, non-pulsing stream of water exiting the nozzle. Once the "sputtering" stops and the flow is consistent, release the trigger.
- Start the engine normally. Let it idle for 10 seconds before squeezing the trigger again to engage the high-pressure mode.
If That Didn't Work
- Clean the Inlet Screen: Unscrew the water inlet hose connection and look inside the port. There is a small mesh filter screen. If this is clogged with sediment or algae, the pump cannot pull enough water to prime. Use a soft toothbrush and compressed air to clear the debris from the mesh.
- Inspect the Nozzle Tip: Remove the spray nozzle from the end of the wand. If the tiny orifice in the nozzle is plugged with a grain of sand or calcium buildup, the pump will "deadhead," preventing water flow. Try running the unit with the nozzle removed; if water flows freely, use a thin sewing needle or a nozzle cleaning tool to clear the blockage.
- Check for Intake Leaks: Inspect the O-ring where the garden hose connects to the pump. If the O-ring is cracked or pinched, the pump will suck air into the line instead of water. Replace the rubber washer or O-ring to ensure a completely airtight seal.
- Verify the Unloader Valve: If the pump is humming but the water is just cycling back into the pump housing, the unloader valve may be stuck in the "bypass" position. Gently tap the side of the pump manifold with a rubber mallet to jar the internal spring and valve seat back into place.

- NEVER run the engine without water: Running the pump "dry" for more than 30 seconds can overheat the internal seals and permanently score the pistons, leading to a total loss of pressure.
- Avoid "Kinked" Hoses: Always use a heavy-duty 5/8" or 3/4" diameter hose. Using a thin, cheap hose can restrict flow enough to cause the pump to cavitate and lose prime.
- Winterization: Always drain the pump and use a pump protector/antifreeze during winter. A single drop of frozen water can crack the pump manifold, which will look like a priming issue but is actually a structural failure.
- Trigger Discipline: Never run the engine at full throttle for extended periods without pulling the trigger. This creates immense heat and pressure inside the pump head, which can blow out the seals.
