The "hunting" or pulsing sensation in your Briggs & Stratton S2200 is typically caused by a failure in the pressure regulation loop, specifically centering on the unloader valve. This valve acts as a bypass; when you release the trigger, the unloader diverts water back into the pump inlet to prevent pressure build-up. If the internal spring is fatigued or the valve seat is fouled with calcium deposits or grit, the valve "flutters." This creates a rapid cycle of opening and closing, which manifests as an inconsistent spray pattern and a surging engine sound as the pump load fluctuates rapidly. You can confirm this is an unloader issue by observing the engine RPM. If the engine surges (increases and decreases in speed) in perfect synchronization with the pulsing of the water stream, the pump is putting an erratic load on the crankshaft. If the engine stays steady but the water pulses, the issue is likely a restriction in the high-pressure hose or a clogged nozzle. However, in 90% of S2200 cases, the culprit is a sticking unloader piston or a compromised O-ring allowing air or water to bleed back prematurely.
How to Fix It
To resolve the pulsing and restore a steady stream, you must deep-clean and inspect the unloader assembly. Follow these steps precisely:
- Shut off the gas engine and turn off the water supply. Squeeze the trigger on the spray gun several times to bleed out all trapped pressure; never attempt to disassemble the pump while it is pressurized.
- Locate the unloader valve assembly, which is the brass or plastic housing located where the high-pressure hose attaches to the pump manifold.
- Using a socket wrench, carefully remove the unloader bolt/cap. Be mindful of the internal spring; if it pops out, ensure you do not lose it.
- Extract the piston and the internal O-ring. Inspect the O-ring for "flat spots," nicks, or chemical degradation. If the O-ring is flattened, it will not seal, causing the valve to flutter.
- Use a can of compressed air or a soft nylon brush to clear any grit, sand, or mineral scale from the valve seat and the internal bore. Even a single grain of sand can prevent the valve from seating fully.
- Lubricate the O-ring with a small amount of silicone-based grease (do not use petroleum jelly as it can degrade the rubber).
- Reinsert the spring and piston, ensuring the spring is seated squarely. Tighten the cap firmly, but do not over-torque, as you can crack the pump housing.
- Reconnect the water supply, purge the air from the system by running the gun on a low-pressure setting for 30 seconds, and then test the high-pressure stream.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for "Air Starvation" at the inlet. If your garden hose is kinked or the intake filter is clogged, the pump will suck air, creating a cavitation effect that mimics pulsing. Remove the inlet screen filter and clean it with a toothbrush. Ensure you are using a 5/8" diameter hose to provide maximum GPM to the pump.
- Inspect the spray nozzle for partial clogs. A tiny piece of debris in the 0-degree or 15-degree nozzle can create back-pressure that confuses the unloader valve. Soak the nozzles in a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water for two hours to dissolve calcium buildup.
- Verify the engine governor settings. If the engine is surging independently of the water pressure, the governor spring may be stretched or the idle speed is set too low, causing the engine to struggle under the pump's load. Adjust the throttle lever to the "High" or "Fast" position.
- Replace the unloader valve entirely. If the internal spring has lost its tension (tension fatigue), cleaning will not fix the problem. Order a replacement unloader kit specifically rated for the S2200 pump displacement.
Heads Up
- Never run the pump "dry." Running the S2200 without water for even 30 seconds can overheat the pump seals, leading to permanent pressure loss and pulsing.
- Always use a high-quality inline water filter. Most pulsing issues start with sand or sediment from the municipal line entering the unloader valve.
- Avoid using "pressure washer detergents" that are not specifically designed for the S2200; harsh chemicals can eat away at the unloader O-rings.
- Store the unit in a temperature-controlled environment. If water freezes inside the pump manifold, it can warp the unloader seat, requiring a full pump replacement.
