Diagnosis
The grinding noise emanating from the rear of the Canon imageCLASS MF453dw is almost always indicative of a mechanical failure within the fuser assembly or the drive gear train. In this specific model, the fuser uses a combination of a heating element and a pressure roller to bond toner to the page. When you hear a "horrible grinding," it is usually the sound of the drive gear slipping against a seized fuser roller or a stripped plastic gear tooth failing to engage. This occurs most frequently when a piece of heavy cardstock, a label, or a staple becomes lodged in the fuser gap, creating excessive resistance. The motor continues to push the gears, but because the roller cannot rotate, the gears "jump" or strip, creating that loud, rhythmic grinding sound. You can confirm this by opening the rear cover and observing the gear assembly on the side of the fuser; if you see small plastic shards or "dust" around the gears, the assembly has suffered mechanical failure. If the noise only happens during the final stage of the print cycle (as the paper exits), the fuser is the definitive culprit.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must perform a deep inspection of the fuser drive system and clear any physical obstructions that are causing the gear slippage.
- Power down the printer completely and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. This is critical as the fuser operates at extremely high temperatures and can cause severe burns.
- Locate the rear cover/access door on the back of the MF453dw. Open it fully to expose the fuser unit (the assembly with the orange or green rollers).
- Use a high-intensity flashlight to inspect the gap between the pressure roller and the heating film. Look for tiny scraps of paper, adhesive residue from labels, or foreign objects like staples.
- If debris is found, use a pair of needle-nose pliers or tweezers to gently pull the object out in the direction of the paper path. Do not use a knife or screwdriver, as scratching the fuser film will cause permanent streaks on every print.
- Locate the drive gears on the side of the fuser assembly. Gently rotate the gear by hand. If it feels "stuck" or makes a clicking sound, the internal bearings of the fuser have failed.
- Close the rear cover firmly, ensuring the locking tabs click into place. If the cover is not seated perfectly, the drive gear will not engage fully, causing a grinding noise.
- Plug the unit back in and run a "Status Print" from the settings menu to test the mechanical movement.
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the Fuser Unit: If the grinding persists and you see plastic shavings on the gears, the fuser assembly is stripped. You will need to replace the entire fuser unit (Part No: F163331 or compatible). This involves removing the side panels and the mounting screws that hold the fuser to the chassis.
- Inspect the Main Drive Gear: The issue may not be the fuser itself, but the drive gear on the motor assembly that turns the fuser. Remove the rear panel and check if the gear teeth are worn down. If the motor gear is stripped, the entire drive motor assembly must be replaced.
- Check for Paper Path Obstructions: Sometimes a small piece of paper is lodged in the registration rollers just before the fuser. Open the front cover, remove the toner cartridge, and check the transfer belt area for any debris that might be putting undue stress on the drive train.
- Reset the Machine: Perform a hard reset by unplugging the machine for 60 seconds. In rare cases, a sensor malfunction can cause the motor to over-torque, leading to a noise that sounds like grinding but is actually an electrical surge in the motor.

- Burn Hazard: The fuser assembly reaches temperatures exceeding 200°C. Always let the printer cool for at least 30 minutes after printing before touching the rear rollers.

- Label Warning: Never use labels that are not specifically designed for laser printers. The adhesive can melt onto the fuser rollers, causing the rollers to seize and the gears to grind.
- Cleanliness: Periodically blow out the rear of the machine with compressed air to remove toner dust, which can accumulate in the gear teeth and cause slippage.
