In these laser printers, the imaging unit (drum) must be precisely charged with a uniform layer of electricity to attract toner particles. When one side of the page is faint, it indicates that the Primary Charge Roller (PCR) inside the imaging unit is failing or that the high-voltage contact points are obstructed, preventing a consistent charge across the entire width of the drum. If the faintness appears as vertical streaks or a gradual fade from left to right, the issue is likely a "dirty" contact or a degraded drum surface. If the toner is physically present in the cartridge but not adhering to the paper, the problem lies in the transfer of the image from the drum to the page. You can confirm this by printing a "Half-Tone" or "Grayscale" test page; if the gradient is uneven across the horizontal axis, the imaging unit is the culprit. This is distinct from a toner issue, which would typically result in horizontal bands or white streaks across the entire page.
How to Fix It
To resolve uneven printing and restore full density, you must perform a deep reseat and contact cleaning of the imaging unit and toner assembly.
- Power down the MF453dw completely and unplug it from the wall to discharge any residual static electricity.
- Open the front cover and pull the toner cartridge (Cartridge 054/057) straight out of the machine.
- Locate the green imaging unit (drum) situated directly behind the toner slot. Grasp the handle and lift it out carefully. Do not touch the shiny green surface of the roller with your fingers, as skin oils cause permanent spots.
- Inspect the rear of the imaging unit for the electrical contact strips—these are small, metallic gold-colored pads. Use a lint-free microfiber cloth dampened with a tiny amount of 90% isopropyl alcohol to gently wipe these contacts.

- Reinsert the toner cartridge, pushing it firmly until it locks.
- Close the front cover and run the "Calibration" utility from the printer's Home Menu under [Menu] > [Adjustment/Maintenance] > [Calibration].
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the Imaging Unit (Drum): If cleaning the contacts fails, the organic photoconductor (OPC) layer on the drum has likely worn out. The imaging unit is a separate consumable from the toner. Replace the drum unit (Part No. GPR-54 or equivalent) and check if the density returns to normal.
- Adjust the Density Settings: Access the printer's remote UI via your web browser. Navigate to [Settings/Registration] > [Preferences] > [Printer] > [Print Quality] and increase the "Toner Density" setting. If the faintness disappears, the drum was simply nearing the end of its lifecycle.
- Check for Humidity/Paper Issues: High humidity can cause the paper to hold a slight charge, leading to uneven transfer. Try a fresh ream of 20lb laser-grade paper stored in a dry environment to rule out "damp paper" syndrome.
- Inspect the Transfer Roller: Look at the black spongy roller located underneath the imaging unit. If there is a buildup of waste toner or a physical indentation on one side, it will prevent the toner from jumping from the drum to the paper. Carefully clean this with a dry, soft brush—do not use chemicals on the sponge.

- Avoid Direct Drum Exposure: Never expose the green imaging drum to bright sunlight or overhead fluorescent lights for more than a few minutes, as this can "burn" the drum and create permanent white streaks on every page.
- Toner Shaking Technique: While not the cause of side-fading, if you see horizontal streaks, remove the toner cartridge and rock it gently side-to-side five times to redistribute the powder.
- Use Genuine Consumables: Third-party "compatible" drums often have inconsistent electrical conductivity, which is the primary cause of the "faint side" issue in the MF453dw series.
- Firmware Updates: Ensure your printer is on the latest firmware; Canon occasionally releases updates that optimize the voltage delivery to the imaging unit to extend its lifespan.
