This typically happens in the storage bin because the unit lacks an insulated interior; the cubes are exposed to ambient air, which causes the outer layers of the ice to melt into a thin film of water. When these wet cubes touch, they fuse together into a solid mass. This is often triggered by "thermal shock" or poor airflow. If the machine is pushed too close to a wall or placed in a cold garage/basement, the internal thermostat struggles to maintain a consistent temperature, leading to uneven cooling. Additionally, if the water filter is clogged or the water is overly mineralized (hard water), the ice structure becomes more porous and prone to melting faster, increasing the likelihood of cubes sticking together.
How to Fix It
To stop the ice from fusing and ensure clean, individual cubes, follow these precise steps:
- Optimize Airflow: Move the unit at least 6 inches (15cm) away from any walls or cabinetry. The intake vents on the sides and back must have clear access to air; if they are blocked, the compressor overheats, causing the internal temperature to fluctuate and the ice to melt/refreeze.
- Manage Ambient Temperature: Ensure the room temperature is between 62°F and 85°F. If the room is too cold (below 60°F), the sensor may not trigger the cooling cycle correctly. If it is too hot, the ice melts faster than it can be harvested.
- Clear the Bin Regularly: Do not allow ice to sit in the bin for more than 12-24 hours. Because this model does not have a freezer compartment, the ice will naturally clump if left stagnant. Scoop the ice into a dedicated insulated freezer bin every 4-6 hours.
- Perform a Deep Descale: If you have hard water, minerals create "bridges" between cubes. Mix 1 part white distilled vinegar with 3 parts warm water. Pour the solution into the reservoir, run one full ice-making cycle, then discard the ice and run two cycles of plain filtered water to rinse.

If That Didn't Work
