Diagnosis
The Ryobi ONE+ P215K1 utilizes a simple parallel circuit where the LED work light is triggered by the same switch mechanism that engages the motor. Because the drill motor continues to spin, we know the battery contact and the primary trigger switch are functional. The failure is isolated to the lighting sub-circuit. In most cases, this is caused by a "cold solder joint" or a fractured wire leading from the trigger assembly to the LED diode. Because these drills are often subjected to high-frequency vibration and sudden jolts during fastening, the thin-gauge wiring can fatigue and snap. Another common cause is the failure of the LED diode itself. While LEDs are rated for thousands of hours, a sudden voltage spike or physical impact to the front housing can crack the internal semiconductor. To confirm if it is a wiring issue versus a dead bulb, you can check for continuity using a multimeter set to Ohms; if the circuit is open between the trigger lead and the LED anode, the wire has severed. If the circuit is closed but the light remains dark, the LED diode has burned out.
How to Fix It
To repair the light, you will need to perform a partial teardown of the tool housing. You will need a T15 Torx driver and a soldering iron.
- Remove the 18V battery pack and ensure the tool is completely powered down.
- Using the T15 Torx driver, remove the screws securing the plastic clamshell housing. Pay close attention to the screw lengths, as the screws near the trigger are often shorter than those at the rear of the motor housing.
- Carefully pry the two halves of the casing apart. Avoid pulling the housing too far, as there are internal wires connecting the trigger to the motor and the LED.
- Locate the LED diode at the base of the drill head. Trace the two thin wires (usually red and black) back to the trigger switch assembly.
- Inspect the solder points where the LED wires meet the diode. If the wire is detached, strip 2mm of insulation from the wire and solder it back to the corresponding pad on the LED.
- If the wire is broken mid-span, cut the damaged section, strip the ends, and join them using a heat-shrink sleeve and solder to prevent future shorts.
- Reassemble the housing, ensuring the wires are tucked into their molded channels so they aren't pinched when you tighten the screws.
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the LED Diode: If the wiring is intact but the light is dead, the diode is blown. You can source a generic 3V-5V white LED diode. Desolder the old diode and solder the new one in its place, ensuring the polarity is correct (longer leg is positive).
- Inspect the Trigger Switch: The P215K1 trigger has a dedicated contact point for the light. Use a multimeter to check for voltage at the trigger's light output pin when the trigger is pulled. If no voltage is present, the internal contact in the switch has failed, requiring a full replacement of the trigger assembly.
- Clean the Optical Window: If the light is dim rather than dead, use a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol to clean the interior and exterior of the clear plastic lens. Construction dust and lubricant seepage can create a film that blocks 80% of the lumen output.
- Check Battery Terminal Tension: Occasionally, a slightly loose battery contact can provide enough current for the motor but not a stable enough connection for the sensitive LED driver. Clean the battery terminals with a fine-grit sandpaper to ensure a flush connection.
Heads Up
- Avoid using "liquid solder" or conductive glue; these are not permanent and will fail under the vibration of the drill motor.
- When soldering inside the housing, be extremely careful not to touch the plastic casing with the iron, as it will melt instantly and may warp the tool's alignment.
- Always perform a "dry test" of the light with the housing open before screwing the tool back together to avoid having to repeat the teardown.
- Keep the internal wiring clear of the gear housing; if a wire migrates into the planetary gears, it will be severed instantly and could jam the motor.
