While a microscopic amount of play is inherent to all handheld power tools, a visible wobble during rotation indicates that the drill bit is not rotating on a true center axis. This is typically caused by one of three things: debris accumulation in the jaw grooves, a bent drill bit, or a misalignment of the internal chuck spindle. If the wobble persists across multiple different bits, the issue lies within the chuck assembly itself. Over time, fine sawdust, drywall dust, or metal shavings migrate into the internal threads and the three-jaw mechanism. This prevents the jaws from closing symmetrically, pushing the bit slightly off-center. In more severe cases, if the tool was dropped or used to force a large hole without a pilot, the internal bearing or the spindle shaft may have developed a slight bend, which manifests as a centrifugal wobble that increases as the RPMs rise.
How to Fix It
To resolve runout caused by debris or improper seating, follow these precise steps:
- Remove the battery pack from the base of the P215K1 to ensure the trigger cannot be accidentally engaged during cleaning.
- Open the chuck jaws to their maximum extension by rotating the sleeve counter-clockwise.
- Use a can of high-pressure compressed air to blow out the interior of the jaws. Direct the nozzle specifically into the gaps between the moving jaw segments and the outer sleeve to dislodge packed grit.
- Apply a small amount of penetrating oil or a dry PTFE lubricant to the jaw threads. Rotate the chuck open and closed several times to work the lubricant into the mechanism.
- Select a high-quality, brand-new HSS (High-Speed Steel) drill bit. Avoid using old bits that may have a slight, invisible bend.
- Insert the bit and ensure it is seated fully at the back of the chuck. If the bit is too short, it may not be gripped by all three jaws equally, causing a wobble.
- Tighten the chuck firmly. For the P215K1, use a firm grip but do not over-torque with pliers, as this can distort the chuck sleeve.
- Run the drill at low speed first to observe the rotation, then gradually increase to full speed to confirm the bit is tracking straight.
If That Didn't Work
- Test with a different bit type: Swap your standard drill bit for a hex-shank accessory. If the hex-shank bit rotates perfectly but the round-shank bit wobbles, the issue is likely the grip of the jaws rather than the spindle. This confirms the chuck needs a deeper cleaning or replacement.
- Inspect the Spindle Alignment: Place the drill in a vise (clamping it by the body, not the chuck) and use a dial indicator or a precision ruler to measure the distance from the tip of the chuck to the workbench as you rotate it by hand. If the measurement varies by more than 0.5mm, the internal spindle is bent, requiring a full chuck assembly replacement.
- Check for Gearbox Play: Remove the chuck if possible or check for "slop" by pushing the chuck forward and backward. If there is significant longitudinal movement, the internal planetary gears or the thrust bearing may be worn, which allows the chuck to tilt slightly during high-speed rotation.
- Replace the Chuck: If the jaws are physically chipped or the internal threads are stripped, the chuck assembly must be replaced. While Ryobi doesn't sell the P215K1 chuck as a standalone retail part in all regions, a certified technician can swap the chuck head without replacing the entire motor housing.

- Avoid using the drill as a hammer; hitting the chuck to "set" a bit can easily bend the internal spindle, leading to permanent runout.
- Never tighten the chuck using a wrench or pliers; the P215K1 is designed for hand-tightening, and over-tightening can warp the jaw alignment.
