my ecobee premium keeps switching to 'away' mode when i'm definitely home and moving around

DIAGNOSIS The SmartSensor's occupancy detection is too conservative, or you've placed it in a poor location where it can't reliably see motion.

FIX Adjust the sensor's sensitivity and review its placement.

  • In the Ecobee app, go to Sensors > [Select the problematic sensor] > Settings.
  • Increase the 'Occupancy Sensitivity' to 'More Sensitive'.
  • Ensure the sensor is not blocked by furniture, placed in a deep bookshelf, or pointed at a wall. It needs a clear view of the room's main activity area.
  • In the Comfort Settings menu, verify that the sensor you are in is actively included in the 'Home' comfort profile.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK The 'Smart Away' feature is overriding sensor data. Disable it: On the thermostat, go to Settings > Preferences > Smart Away > and turn it off. This stops the Ecobee from guessing you're away based on lack of phone geofencing data.

HEADS UP The sensor uses passive infrared (PIR) and needs a change in heat signatures to detect you. If you're sitting perfectly still on the couch, it may not see you. That's by design to save battery. Use the geofencing feature with your phone for more reliable home/away detection.
