The Epson EcoTank ET-2400 does not utilize physical float sensors or optical eyes to detect the actual liquid level in the ink reservoirs. Instead, it relies on a "virtual ink level" system. This is a software-based counter that subtracts a specific amount of ink from a digital tally every time a page is printed or a nozzle cleaning cycle is performed. Because the printer cannot "see" the ink, the internal counter eventually reaches zero based on the estimated volume of the bottles you initially filled. If you have performed multiple Power Cleanings or if you frequently print high-saturation images, the digital counter will deplete much faster than the actual ink levels in the tanks. When the counter hits zero, the printer triggers a "Replace Ink" or "Ink Out" error message to prevent the printhead from running dry, even if the tanks are visibly half-full. This is a preventative software lock, not a physical hardware failure.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must manually tell the printer that the tanks have been refilled, which resets the internal digital counter to 100%. Follow these exact steps:
- Ensure the printer is powered on and the error message is currently displayed on the screen or your computer.
- Locate the Stop/Reset button on the printer's control panel (the circle icon with a triangle inside).
- Press and hold the Stop/Reset button for exactly 5 seconds, then release it.
- If the error persists, press the Stop/Reset button again, but this time hold it for 10 seconds.
- On the computer side, if you are using the Epson Smart Panel app or the driver software, navigate to Maintenance > Ink Levels.
- Select the option to Reset Ink Levels. You will be asked to confirm which colors have been refilled; check all boxes for the colors that are still half-full and click OK.
- The printer will perform a brief initialization sequence, and the "out of ink" warning will disappear.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Hard Power Cycle: Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord from the wall for at least 60 seconds. While unplugged, hold the power button for 15 seconds to discharge remaining capacitors. Plug it back in and attempt the Reset button sequence again. This clears the temporary volatile memory that sometimes "sticks" on an error state.
- Check for Air Bubbles in the Lines: If the printer says it is out of ink and you are seeing streaks or missing colors despite the tanks being full, air may have entered the ink tubes. Open the scanner unit to view the tubes. If you see gaps of air, run a Nozzle Check and then a Print Head Cleaning cycle through the Maintenance menu. Do not do this more than three times in a row, as it wastes ink and fills the waste ink pad.
- Update Firmware via Epson Software Updater: Sometimes a bug in the firmware causes the ink counter to trigger prematurely. Run the Epson Software Updater utility on your PC or Mac. If a firmware update is available for the ET-2400, install it immediately, as these updates often calibrate the ink estimation algorithms.
- Manual Ink Priming: If the printer refuses to recognize the reset, you may need to use a syringe to manually pull ink from the tank through the dampers (this requires opening the printhead carriage). Only attempt this if you are comfortable working with small plastic components, as damaging the dampers will require a full printhead replacement.
Heads Up
- Avoid "Power Cleaning": Only use the "Power Cleaning" utility as a last resort. It consumes a massive amount of ink and rapidly depletes the digital counter, which will trigger the "out of ink" warning much sooner.
- Print Weekly: To prevent ink from drying in the nozzles (which leads to more cleaning cycles and faster counter depletion), print one test page in full color at least once every 7 days.
- Fill Before Empty: Never let the physical ink level drop below the bottom line of the tank. If air gets sucked into the printhead, you will face permanent clogging regardless of whether the digital counter is reset.
- Use Genuine Ink: Using third-party ink can sometimes change the viscosity, causing the printer to use more ink during cleaning cycles than the software expects, leading to more frequent "false" empty warnings.
