Diagnosis
The presence of faded text or horizontal/vertical streaks on an HP OfficeJet Pro 9125e, despite the installation of fresh HP 936 or 937 ink cartridges, indicates a failure in the ink delivery system—specifically, a partial or total blockage of the printhead nozzles. Because this model uses a thermal inkjet process, ink is ejected through microscopic holes. When the printer sits idle, ink residue dries at these exit points, creating "plugs" that prevent ink from flowing evenly across the page. This is not a cartridge failure, but a mechanical obstruction within the printhead assembly. You can confirm this by printing a "Print Quality Diagnostic Page." If you see missing lines or "banding" in the cyan, magenta, yellow, or black blocks, the printhead is clogged. If the streaks are consistent across every page regardless of the color, it may be a buildup of waste ink or paper dust on the printhead wipers, but 90% of the time, it is dried ink in the nozzles.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must force the printer to purge the air bubbles and dried ink using the internal maintenance sequence. Follow these exact steps:
- On the printer's home screen, swipe left or tap the Setup (wrench icon) menu.
- Navigate to Printer Maintenance and then select Clean Printhead.
- The printer will execute "Level 1" cleaning. Once complete, it will print a test page. Inspect this page closely. If the streaks remain, do not stop; proceed to the second level.
- Select Clean Printhead again to initiate "Level 2" cleaning. This is a more aggressive cycle that uses higher pressure to push ink through the nozzles.
- If the output is still faded, navigate to Tools > Align Printhead. This ensures the nozzles are firing at the correct angle, which can sometimes resolve "streaky" appearances caused by misalignment.
- Perform a final Print Quality Report to verify that all color blocks are solid and devoid of white lines.
If That Didn't Work
- Manual Printhead Cleaning: Remove the ink cartridges and lift the printhead carriage. Use a lint-free, microfiber cloth dampened with distilled water (not tap water) to gently wipe the gold contact points and the bottom nozzle plate. Avoid using rubbing alcohol, as it can dry out the rubber seals.
- Check Vent Holes: Inspect the top of your new HP cartridges. Ensure the orange plastic pull-tabs were removed entirely and that the small vent hole on top of the cartridge is not blocked by adhesive residue. If the vent is blocked, a vacuum forms inside the tank, preventing ink from flowing to the printhead.
- Hard Power Reset: While the printer is ON, pull the power cord directly from the back of the machine. Unplug the wall outlet. Wait exactly 60 seconds. Plug it back in and power on. This forces the ink system to re-prime and can clear "air locks" in the tubing.
- Update Firmware: Navigate to Settings > Printer Options > Update Firmware. HP occasionally releases updates that optimize the printhead cleaning cycles and ink ejection voltage to prevent premature clogging.

- Avoid "Idle" Periods: To prevent future clogs, print at least one full-color page every 7 to 10 days. This keeps the ink moist in the nozzles.
- Use Genuine HP Ink: Third-party "compatible" inks often have different viscosities and drying times, which are the leading cause of permanent printhead failure in the 9125e series.
- Ink Consumption: Be aware that running multiple "Clean Printhead" cycles consumes a significant volume of ink. If you run Level 2 cleaning three times without improvement, stop immediately to avoid wasting ink; the printhead may be physically damaged.
- Paper Quality: Use high-quality, bright white paper. Using recycled or damp paper can introduce fibers into the printhead, causing streaks that cleaning cycles cannot fix.
