Diagnosis
The loud grinding noise emanating from the right side of the HP OfficeJet Pro 9125e is typically caused by a "carriage stall." This occurs when the printhead carriage—the assembly that holds the ink cartridges—cannot reach its home position or move across the carriage rail due to a mechanical obstruction. Because the carriage motor uses a high-torque gear system, any resistance causes the plastic gears to slip or grind against one another, creating a harsh, metallic rattling sound. This is often triggered by a "paper jam ghost," where a tiny scrap of torn paper (sometimes as small as 2mm) is lodged in the far right service station area. Alternatively, the carriage rail may have accumulated a buildup of dried ink and dust, creating enough friction to trigger the printer's internal safety timeout, which forces the motor to strain. You can confirm this by attempting to move the carriage manually while the power is off; if it hits a hard stop before reaching the right edge, there is a physical blockage.
How to Fix It
Follow these precise steps to clear the obstruction and reset the carriage mechanism:
- Power down the printer completely and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet to prevent the motor from engaging while your hands are inside.
- Open the main cartridge access door. If the carriage is locked to the right, do not force it violently.
- Using a flashlight, inspect the "Service Station" (the area on the far right where the printhead parks). Look for small torn pieces of paper, staples, or accumulated ink sludge that may be blocking the carriage's path.
- Carefully slide the carriage toward the center of the printer. If it resists, gently wiggle it side-to-side to loosen any debris.
- Inspect the silver carriage rail (the metal rod). Use a lint-free cloth dampened with a small amount of distilled water to wipe away any black ink residue or dust from the rod.
- Check the "Encoder Strip"—the thin, clear plastic strip that runs horizontally behind the carriage. If there is a smudge of ink on this strip, the printer cannot "see" where the carriage is, causing it to slam into the side. Gently wipe the strip with a dry, lint-free cloth; do not use alcohol as it can erase the timing marks.
- Close the access door and plug the unit back in. Power on and observe if the grinding persists during the initialization sequence.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Hard Power Reset: While the printer is on, pull the power cord from the back of the device. Wait exactly 60 seconds. Plug it back in directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector, as insufficient voltage can sometimes cause the carriage motor to stutter and sound like it is grinding.
- Check for Foreign Objects in the Rear Access: Remove the rear output tray and check the duplexer area. Sometimes a jammed piece of paper in the rear feed path puts pressure on the chassis, slightly warping the internal alignment and causing the carriage to rub against the plastic housing on the right side.
- Inspect the Ink Cartridge Seating: Remove all four ink cartridges. Ensure no cartridges are "popped up" or improperly seated, as a protruding cartridge shell can snag on the internal frame during the home-cycle movement.
- Clean the Service Station Wipers: Use a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol to clean the small rubber wipers located at the far right. If these wipers are stuck in the "up" position, the carriage will collide with them, triggering the grinding noise.

- Never apply WD-40 or standard lubricants to the carriage rail; the 9125e uses a specific low-friction coating that can be ruined by petroleum-based oils, leading to permanent carriage drift.
- Avoid using "compressed air" cans directly into the service station, as this can push small debris deeper into the gear assembly, turning a simple jam into a permanent hardware failure.
- If you see "Error E3" on the display, this is the official code for a carriage jam. Do not keep restarting the printer if this error appears, as repeated grinding can strip the plastic teeth off the drive gear.
- Always ensure the printer is on a completely level surface. An uneven desk can cause the carriage to slide slightly off-axis, increasing friction on the right-side bearings.
