Diagnosis
The "Offline" status on an HP DeskJet 4155e typically indicates a communication breakdown between the Windows/macOS print spooler and the printer's wireless network interface. This happens most frequently when the printer enters a deep sleep mode and fails to "wake" its network card, or when the router assigns a new internal IP address via DHCP that the computer's driver cannot track. If the wireless icon on the printer's display is blinking, the hardware has physically disconnected from the SSID. Another common culprit is the HP Smart app's cloud synchronization. Because the 4155e is an "e" series printer, it relies heavily on a constant handshake with HP's servers. If the printer loses its internet heartbeat, the HP Smart software often flags the device as offline even if the local Wi-Fi connection is technically active. You can confirm this by attempting to print a "Network Configuration Page" from the printer's onboard menu; if the IP address shows as 0.0.0.0 or 169.254.x.x, the printer has lost its lease on the network.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must clear the network cache and re-establish a handshaking connection between the printer and your router.
- Hard Power Cycle: While the printer is on, pull the power cord directly from the back of the machine. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. Wait exactly 60 seconds to drain the capacitors on the logic board.
- Restore Network Defaults: Plug the printer back in. On the control panel, press and hold the Wireless and Cancel (X) buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds. The power button will blink, indicating the network settings have been reset to factory defaults.
- Initiate Setup Mode: Press the Information button (i) to print a page, then press the Wireless** button again to put the printer into "Setup Mode" (the wireless light will blink blue). This mode only lasts for 2 hours.
- Re-pair via HP Smart: Open the HP Smart app on your computer or smartphone. Right-click the offline printer icon and select "Hide" or "Remove Printer." Click the "Add Printer" or the (+) sign. The app will scan for the 4155e in setup mode.
- Finalize Connection: Follow the prompts to enter your Wi-Fi password. Ensure you are connecting to a 2.4GHz band if your router does not support band-steering, as these printers occasionally struggle with 5GHz signals.
If That Didn't Work
- Disable "Use Printer Offline" Mode: In Windows, go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers. Right-click the HP DeskJet 4155e and select "See what's printing." In the window that opens, click the "Printer" menu at the top and ensure "Use Printer Offline" is unchecked. If it is checked, the computer will ignore the printer even if it is online.
- Assign a Static IP Address: Access your router's admin panel (usually 192.168.1.1) and find the DHCP reservation list. Assign a permanent IP address to the printer's MAC address. This prevents the "Offline" error from returning every time the router reboots.
- Clear the Print Spooler: Press Windows Key + R, type
services.msc, and hit Enter. Find "Print Spooler," right-click it, and select "Restart." This clears jammed print jobs that can trick the OS into thinking the device is unresponsive. - Update Firmware: If the printer is online but the PC says offline, use the HP Smart app to check for firmware updates. Outdated firmware on the 4155e often causes "ghost" offline status updates.
Heads Up
- Avoid USB Sleep: If using a USB cable instead of Wi-Fi, go to Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers and disable "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" for the USB Root Hub.
- WPA3 Compatibility: The DeskJet 4155e may struggle with WPA3 security settings on newer Wi-Fi 6 routers. If you experience frequent drops, switch your router security to WPA2/WPA3 Mixed Mode.
- Ink Subscription: If you are using HP+ (Instant Ink), ensure the printer stays connected to Wi-Fi. If it stays offline for too long, the ink cartridges may automatically lock and refuse to print even after the connection is restored.
