my hp m234dwe printer says 'cartridge problem' and won't print at all. using third-party toner.

HP+ printers require Original HP cartridges. Non-Original HP or refilled cartridges will cause the printer to stop functioning.

Check the cartridge policy and replace the cartridge if necessary.

  1. Open the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
  2. Navigate to the System tab, select Supply Settings.
  3. Check the 'Cartridge Policy' drop-down menu. If it is set to 'Authorized HP,' the printer is blocking non-HP toner.
  4. You can try setting the policy to 'Off' and clicking Apply. Note: This may require an administrator password.
  5. If the error persists, you must install an Original HP cartridge in official HP packaging.

If that didn't work: The printer may have detected a damaged or incompatible memory chip on the cartridge. Visually inspect the toner cartridge you removed. Check the memory chip for damage. If damaged, the cartridge must be replaced with an Original HP one.

Heads up: For HP+ models, using Original HP cartridges is mandatory for the printer to operate. This is a firmware restriction.
