Diagnosis
The grinding or "screaming" noise emanating from your Keurig K-Supreme Plus is typically the result of pump cavitation or a mechanical obstruction within the internal water delivery system. When the pump cannot draw water efficiently from the reservoir or push it through the brew head, it creates air pockets and vibration, resulting in a loud, metallic grinding sound. This is often caused by "air-locking," where a bubble of air is trapped in the pump, or by calcium carbonate buildup (scale) that has narrowed the internal tubing to the point where the pump is straining against extreme pressure. In some cases, the noise is caused by a physical blockage at the exit needle—the needle that punctures the bottom of the K-Cup. If coffee grounds or a piece of the plastic pod have migrated into the needle, the pump will work overtime to force water through a microscopic opening, creating a high-pitched vibration. You can confirm this by attempting a "water-only" brew (running a cycle without a pod); if the noise persists, the issue is likely scale or an air lock in the pump. If the noise disappears, the issue was a clogged needle or a defective pod.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must perform a deep clear of the water path and prime the pump to remove trapped air.
- Power Cycle: Unplug the machine from the wall outlet and leave it disconnected for at least 60 seconds to reset the internal control board.
- Clear the Exit Needle: Open the brew head and remove the K-Cup holder. Locate the exit needle at the bottom of the pod chamber. Take a straightened paperclip or a professional cleaning needle (0.5mm diameter) and gently insert it into the needle hole. Move it in and out several times to dislodge any compacted coffee oils or grounds.
- Reservoir Seal Check: Remove the water reservoir and inspect the rubber gasket at the base. If there is a hairline crack or a piece of debris on the seal, the pump will suck in air instead of water, causing the grinding noise. Wipe the seal with a damp cloth and reseat the reservoir firmly.
- The "Force Prime" Method: Fill the reservoir to the max line. Plug the machine back in. Without inserting a pod, select the largest cup size (12oz). As the grinding noise begins, gently lift the handle up and down a few times (without fully opening it) to create a pressure fluctuation that can help "burp" air bubbles out of the pump.
- Descale Cycle: If the noise is muffled but present, run a descaling solution (or a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and distilled water). Fill the reservoir, start the brew, and let the solution sit in the internal boiler for 30 minutes before completing the cycle.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Hard Reset: If the pump is air-locked and won't prime, fill the reservoir and then rapidly press the "Brew" button five times in quick succession. This can sometimes trigger a high-pressure cycle that forces the air bubble through the system.
- Inspect the Water Intake Valve: Check the small rubber valve at the bottom of the water reservoir. If this valve is stuck closed or clogged with slime/algae, the pump will starve for water and grind. Use a toothpick to ensure the spring-loaded valve moves freely.
- Deep Clean the Upper Needle: The top needle (which punctures the foil) can also cause backpressure. Use a needle to clear the top puncture point, as a blockage here forces the pump to work harder to push water into the pod.
- Internal Pump Replacement: If the noise is a loud, rhythmic clacking and no water is flowing despite these steps, the internal pump diaphragm may have ruptured. This requires a full teardown of the chassis to replace the pump assembly.

- Use Filtered Water: Always use filtered or distilled water to prevent the calcium buildup that leads to pump strain and grinding noises.
- Avoid Third-Party Pods: Some "reusable" or off-brand K-Cups have thicker plastic that prevents a clean puncture, causing the pump to over-pressurize.
- Monthly Descaling: Descale your K-Supreme Plus every 3 months, regardless of whether you hear noise, to maintain the pump's longevity.
- Avoid Dry Brewing: Never start a brew cycle if the reservoir is empty; this introduces air into the pump which is the primary cause of the grinding sound.
