This typically occurs if there was a power surge, a sudden power loss during a firmware write-cycle, or if a corrupted update file was pushed via the network (Wi-Fi/Ethernet) while the printer was in sleep mode. You can confirm this is a software-level brick because the printer will remain unresponsive to standard "Clear" or "Cancel" commands, and the error will persist even after a full power cycle (unplugging for 60 seconds).
How to Fix It
To resolve E748, you must perform a forced firmware overwrite using a physical USB connection to bypass the corrupted boot sector.
- Power off the printer completely using the main power switch.
- Using a separate computer, download the latest Firmware Update Tool specifically for the LBP236dw. Ensure you are downloading the .bin or .exe file designated for the "dw" model, as using the standard LBP236 firmware will cause a mismatch.
- Format a USB flash drive (maximum 32GB) to FAT32. Copy the firmware file to the root directory of the drive; do not place it inside any folders.
- Insert the USB drive into the port located on the side/front of the LBP236dw.
