Once the internal counter reaches a pre-programmed threshold, the firmware triggers a "Replace Toner" alert and activates the orange alarm LED, regardless of how much physical powder remains in the hopper.
This occurs most frequently when using high-yield cartridges or third-party remanufactured units where the chip may not have been correctly reset or the printer's firmware perceives the consumption rate as higher than actual. To confirm this is a logic error and not a physical depletion, perform a "Print Quality" check; if the pages are still coming out with deep, saturated blacks and no streaking, the cartridge is physically viable, and the issue is purely a software lockout.
How to Fix It
To bypass the toner depletion lockout and reset the internal counter on the LBP236dw, follow these precise steps:
- Power on the printer and wait for the orange alarm light to illuminate and the "Replace Toner" message to appear on the LCD screen.
- Open the front cover of the printer to expose the toner cartridge. This action tells the printer that a replacement is being attempted.
- Locate the Stop/Reset button (usually represented by a red circle with a triangle inside) on the physical control panel.
- Press and hold the Stop/Reset button firmly for exactly 10 seconds. You will notice the orange alarm light may flicker or change patterns.
