Diagnosis
The Lux GEO WiFi Thermostat is designed with an "Auto Changeover" logic system. When this mode is active, the thermostat does not stay in a fixed "Heat" or "Cool" state; instead, it monitors the ambient room temperature against a predefined "deadband" range. If the temperature drops below the lower threshold, it triggers the furnace; if it rises above the upper threshold, it triggers the AC. This creates a loop where the device appears to be "switching by itself" because it is attempting to maintain a narrow temperature window automatically. You can confirm this is the issue by looking at the main screen. If the mode indicator displays "Auto" or a symbol representing both a flame and a snowflake simultaneously, the changeover logic is active. Another indicator is the "Auto-Change" setting in the advanced installer menu, which overrides manual user input to ensure the home never gets too hot or too cold, regardless of the season. This is often enabled during initial setup or accidentally triggered during a firmware update.
How to Fix It
To disable the automatic switching and lock the thermostat into a manual mode, follow these precise steps:
- Wake the screen by tapping the display. Press the Menu button located on the home screen.
- Navigate through the menu using the arrow keys until you reach Settings, then press Select.
- Enter the System Settings submenu.
- Scroll down to locate the System Mode or Auto Changeover option.
- If the setting is currently set to "Auto," use the arrow keys to change this to either Heat (for winter) or Cool (for summer).
- Press Select or Done to lock in the choice.
- Return to the home screen and verify that the mode icon now shows only the single icon for the mode you selected.
- If you are using a schedule, go to Schedule > Edit and ensure that individual time blocks are not set to "Auto," as scheduled mode changes can override the global system setting.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for "Smart Recovery" conflicts: Some Lux GEO models have a Smart Recovery feature that calculates how long it takes to reach a temperature. If this is fighting with a tight schedule, it may trigger the opposite mode to "prep" the house. Disable "Smart Recovery" in the Advanced Settings menu to see if the erratic switching stops.
- Inspect the C-Wire and Power Stability: If the thermostat is losing power momentarily (power cycling), it may reboot into a default "Auto" state. Check the 24V AC power coming from the transformer. If you are using a power extender kit or a plug-in transformer, ensure the wires are seated tightly in the RC and C terminals. A loose C-wire often causes ghost-switching.
- Perform a Factory Reset: If a software glitch is causing the mode to flip, perform a hard reset. Navigate to Menu > Settings > Reset > All Settings. This will wipe your WiFi and schedule data but will clear any corrupted logic flags causing the auto-switch.
- Verify HVAC Compatibility: If you have a heat pump with auxiliary heat, ensure the thermostat is configured for "Heat Pump" and not "Conventional" in the Installer Setup. An incorrect system type can cause the thermostat to trigger the wrong stage of heating/cooling, which looks like a mode switch.

- Avoid "Auto" in Extreme Weather: Using Auto Changeover during a heatwave or deep freeze can cause your HVAC system to "short cycle," meaning it turns on and off rapidly, which can burn out your compressor or capacitor.
- Firmware Updates: Always ensure your Lux GEO is connected to a stable 2.4GHz WiFi network. Firmware updates are pushed automatically and often include fixes for "mode-drift" bugs.
- Battery Check: If your model uses backup batteries, replace them annually. Low voltage can cause the processor to glitch, leading to random setting changes.
