my machine starts brewing but then just stops after a few seconds, like it gives up

— asked by Riley

DIAGNOSIS The unit is overheating and the thermal fuse or safety cutoff is tripping. This is often caused by insufficient water in the reservoir for the cycle.

FIX Ensure you are adding enough cold water to at least reach the minimum line (usually 4 cups) for the brew cycle you've selected. The heating element can't run dry. Also, check that the carafe is fully seated on the warming plate, as a sensor might not engage.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Internal scale buildup can cause hot spots and premature overheating. Descale with vinegar as outlined in the burnt taste fix.

HEADS UP If it consistently stops on a full tank, the thermal fuse is likely on its way out and may need replacement (see the 'won't turn on' fix for the procedure).
