Diagnosis
Some heat generation, particularly near the battery during sustained high-torque work, is normal due to electrical resistance in the motor and contacts. However, "really hot" to the touch (typically over 60°C/140°F) indicates excessive heat, which is a warning sign of overloading or a fault. This most commonly happens when you are forcing the drill (pressing too hard), using a dull or incorrect bit, or using a high speed setting on dense material like hardwood or metal. This strains the motor and electronics. A hot battery pack is more serious and can point to cell imbalance, age, or damage.
How to Fix It
- Stop using the drill immediately and remove the battery to let both cool completely.
- For future use, match your speed setting to the material: use lower speeds (setting 1 or 2) for driving screws and high-torque drilling, and higher speed (setting 2) only for low-torque drilling in soft materials.
- Apply steady, moderate pressure; let the tool's gearing and bit do the work. Ensure you are using sharp, appropriate bits (e.g., pilot holes for large screws).
- After cooling, test the drill under a light, brief load. If it still overheats rapidly without significant pressure, the issue may be internal.
If That Didn't Work
If operational adjustments don't resolve the overheating, the cause is likely hardware-related.
- If the motor housing is the primary heat source, the motor may be failing or the internal fan may be obstructed with dust.
- If the battery pack is the primary and disproportionate heat source, or if its runtime has drastically shortened, the battery itself is faulty. The XFD131 uses 18V LXT batteries; a failing pack can cause overheating, reduced power, and should be replaced. Do not continue using a hot or swollen battery.
- For motor or electronic issues, the drill requires service at a Makita Authorized Service Center.
Heads Up
Never charge a battery that is hot from use. Always allow it to reach room temperature first. Store the tool and battery away from direct sunlight and locations where temperatures can exceed 50°C (122°F), as heat accelerates battery degradation and poses a safety risk.
