The "wandering" effect you are experiencing with the Makita XFD131 is caused by a lack of initial mechanical engagement between the drill bit's cutting edge and the metal surface. Most high-speed steel (HSS) bits have a slightly tapered point; when this point touches a smooth, hard metal surface, the rotational force (torque) overcomes the friction of the point, causing the bit to skate across the workpiece before it can "bite" into the material. This is exacerbated if you are using the High (2) speed setting, where the increased RPMs cause the bit to deflect even more easily. Furthermore, wandering often occurs due to "bit walk," where the drill bit is not perfectly perpendicular to the surface. Because the XFD131 is a compact driver-drill, any slight tilt in your grip is magnified. If the bit is not seated in a physical depression, the centrifugal force of the spinning bit will naturally push it toward the path of least resistance, resulting in an off-center hole or a jagged entry point that ruins the finish of your metal workpiece.
How to Fix It
To achieve a precision, professional-grade hole with the XFD131, follow this exact sequence:
- Create a Pilot Indentation: Mark your hole with a scribe or marker. Use a hardened steel center punch and a ball-peen hammer to drive a physical dimple into the metal. The dimple should be deep enough that the tip of your drill bit nests securely inside it without sliding.
- Select the Correct Speed: Slide the speed selector switch on top of the tool to position 1 (Low). This limits the tool to 0-500 RPM. High speeds generate excessive heat and increase the likelihood of the bit skating if it loses grip.
- Apply Cutting Lubricant: Apply a drop of cutting oil or a multipurpose lubricant (like 3-in-1 oil) directly to the tip of the bit. This reduces friction and prevents the metal from "galling" or welding itself to the flutes of the bit.
- Position and Grip: Place the bit tip exactly in the center of the punched dimple. Grip the handle firmly and place your non-dominant hand under the base of the 18V LXT battery cartridge to provide a secondary point of stability, ensuring the drill is perfectly 90 degrees to the surface.
- The "Slow Start" Technique: Gently squeeze the trigger to start the rotation at a very low speed. Apply steady, moderate downward pressure. Once the bit has "bitten" into the metal and the flutes begin to eject curls of metal (swarf), you can gradually increase the trigger pressure to a medium speed.
- Clear the Flutes: Every 1/4 inch of depth, pull the bit back slightly while it is still spinning to clear the metal chips from the hole. This prevents the bit from binding and overheating.
If That Didn't Work
- Upgrade to Cobalt Bits: If you are drilling stainless steel or hardened alloys, standard HSS bits will dull almost instantly, leading to wandering. Switch to M35 Cobalt drill bits, which maintain a sharper edge at higher temperatures.
- Step-Drilling Method: If you need a large hole (e.g., 1/2" or larger), do not start with the final bit. Drill a small 1/8" pilot hole first, then incrementally increase the bit size (1/8" to 1/4" to 3/8" to 1/2"). This reduces the torque load on the XFD131 and ensures the hole remains centered.
- Clamp the Workpiece: If the metal is thin or a small piece, the material itself may be vibrating or shifting. Use a C-clamp or a vice to secure the metal to a sturdy workbench. Any movement in the workpiece will cause the bit to wander regardless of your technique.
- Check the Chuck Tightness: Ensure the keyless chuck is tightened fully. If the bit is slipping slightly within the jaws, it can create a wobble that mimics wandering. Tighten the chuck firmly by hand and then give it a final clockwise snap.

- Avoid Over-Pressuring: If you have to lean your entire body weight into the drill, your bit is dull. Forcing a dull bit will burn the tempering out of the steel, ruining the bit and potentially stalling the XFD131 motor.
- Heat Management: If the bit becomes too hot to touch, stop immediately. Let it cool and re-apply lubricant. Overheating leads to "work hardening," where the metal becomes even harder to drill through.
- Safety First: Always wear impact-resistant safety glasses. Metal "swarf" (the curly shavings) is razor-sharp and can fly off at high speeds, especially when using the High (2) speed setting.
- Battery Care: Drilling through thick metal is high-drain work. If you notice a significant drop in power, swap your LXT battery to avoid overheating the cells.
