Diagnosis
The humming or vibrating noise in the PuroAir 240 is typically caused by mechanical resonance or an imbalance in the centrifugal fan assembly. Because this unit utilizes a high-RPM brushless DC motor to push air through a dense HEPA filter, any slight misalignment or foreign object can create a harmonic vibration that amplifies through the plastic chassis, turning the entire housing into a sounding board. If the noise started suddenly, it is often due to a shifted filter seal or a piece of debris (like pet hair or a small toy) trapped in the fan shroud. To confirm the source, place your hand on the top of the unit while it is running. If you feel a rhythmic pulsing, it is a mechanical imbalance. If the noise changes pitch when you move the unit slightly, it is likely a resonance issue caused by the surface it is sitting on. If the noise is a high-pitched whine accompanied by a rattle, it usually indicates that the filter is not seated flush against the internal gasket, allowing air to leak and create a "whistling" vibration.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps to isolate and eliminate the vibration:
- Power down the unit and unplug it from the wall outlet to ensure the fan has completely stopped spinning.
- Remove the magnetic front grille by pulling it away from the chassis.
- Carefully slide out the HEPA filter assembly. Inspect the edges of the filter for any gaps, tears, or accumulated clumps of pet hair that might be preventing a tight seal.
- Check the fan intake area (the space behind the filter) for any foreign objects, such as stray pet toys or large clumps of dust, and remove them using a vacuum or tweezers.
- Reinsert the filter, ensuring it is pushed firmly into the housing. If the filter is slightly skewed, it will cause the motor to work harder and vibrate more.
- Snap the magnetic grille back into place, ensuring it is flush against the body.
- Relocate the unit to a hard, level surface. Ensure there is a minimum of 10 inches of clearance from walls, curtains, or furniture. If the unit is on a thick carpet, place a rigid mat or a piece of plywood underneath it to prevent the base from flexing.
- Plug the unit back in and cycle through the fan speeds (Low, Medium, High) to see if the noise persists at specific RPMs.
If That Didn't Work
- Inspect the Base Feet: Check the rubberized feet on the bottom of the PuroAir 240. If one is missing or compressed, the unit will wobble, creating a loud humming sound. You can temporarily fix this by placing a thin piece of adhesive felt or rubber under the short leg to level the device.
- Deep Clean the Fan Blades: Over time, dust can accumulate unevenly on the fan blades, throwing the motor out of balance. Use a can of compressed air to blow out the fan housing from the top down to remove any heavy dust buildup that could be causing an imbalance.
- Check for External Interference: Ensure the unit is not placed near another vibrating appliance (like a refrigerator or space heater). Sympathetic vibration can occur where the PuroAir 240 picks up the frequency of another machine, making it sound like the purifier itself is failing.
- Filter Replacement: If the HEPA filter is heavily saturated with pet dander and oils, it can become "heavy" or slightly deformed, restricting airflow and causing the motor to strain. Replace the filter with a fresh OEM replacement to see if the noise vanishes.

- Never operate the PuroAir 240 without the filter installed, as this can allow dust to enter the motor bearings, leading to permanent mechanical failure and a permanent grinding noise.
- Avoid placing the unit on unstable surfaces like folding tables or thin shelving, as the high-frequency vibration of the motor can cause these surfaces to amplify the sound.
- Vacuum the exterior intake vents once every two weeks to prevent the motor from overheating, which can lead to bearing wear and increased noise levels over time.
- If you hear a metallic "clanking" or "scraping" sound rather than a hum, stop using the device immediately as this indicates a bearing failure or a loose fan blade.
