Diagnosis
The discrepancy between your Nest Learning Thermostat 4th Gen reading (72°F) and the actual ambient temperature (68°F) is typically caused by "ghost heating" or thermal leakage. This occurs when the internal temperature sensor is being fooled by a heat source other than the room air. The most common culprit is air leaking through the hole in the wall behind the thermostat baseplate; warm air from inside the wall cavity (which is often warmer than the room) blows directly onto the sensor, making the device believe the target temperature has been reached when the living space is still cold. Another possibility is the "internal heat" phenomenon. If the thermostat is experiencing high Wi-Fi activity or is charging its internal battery rapidly, the internal components can generate enough heat to skew the sensor. You can confirm this by placing a calibrated digital thermometer (like a Govee or a precise mercury thermometer) directly on top of the Nest display for 30 minutes. If the Nest reads 72°F but the external thermometer reads 68°F, you have a sensor calibration or environmental interference issue. If both read 72°F but the room feels like 68°F, you have a distribution problem (cold spots) or an HVAC performance issue.
How to Fix It
To resolve sensor inaccuracy caused by wall drafts and to ensure the 4th Gen Nest is reading the room air accurately, follow these steps:
- Carefully pull the Nest display off the baseplate to expose the wiring and the wall hole.
- Inspect the hole where the wires emerge from the wall. If you see a gap larger than 1/4 inch, use a small piece of plumbers putty, expanding foam, or a piece of insulating foam tape to plug the hole completely. This prevents warm wall-cavity air from hitting the sensor.
- Reattach the display and allow the system to stabilize for 60 minutes without touching the dial.
- To verify the reading, go to the Settings menu on the device, navigate to Technical Info, and select Temperatures. Compare this reading to your independent thermometer.
- If a slight offset persists, utilize the Temperature Offset feature (if available in your region's firmware) or adjust the Eco Temperature thresholds to force the system to run longer.
- Ensure the thermostat is not in direct sunlight or near a heat-producing appliance (like a lamp or TV), as the 4th Gen's high-sensitivity sensors will react to these localized heat sources immediately.
If That Didn't Work
- Deploy Nest Temperature Sensors: If the thermostat is located in a hallway but you are cold in the living room, the Nest is heating the hallway to 72°F and shutting off. Add a Nest Temperature Sensor (model G3S0) to the cold room. In the Google Home app, go to Settings > Thermostat > Sensor Management and select the sensor in the cold room as the primary temperature source during the "Heat" period.
- Check the C-Wire (Common Wire) Voltage: If your Nest is power-stealing (no C-wire), it can cause the internal components to overheat during charging cycles, inflating the temperature reading. Check Settings > Technical Info > Power. If the "Vin" or "Lin" voltages are fluctuating significantly, install a Nest Power Connector or run a dedicated 18-gauge C-wire to stabilize the power and cool the internal sensor.
- Inspect HVAC Airflow: If the Nest is accurately reading 72°F but the room feels like 68°F, check your air filters. A clogged MERV 11 or 13 filter restricts airflow, causing the air immediately around the thermostat to warm up while the rest of the house stays cold. Replace the filter and check for blocked registers in the cold rooms.
- Disable "Early-On" / True Radiant: If you have radiant floor heating, the "True Radiant" feature may be calculating the "coast" period incorrectly, shutting off the heat too early. Go to Settings > Nest Sense > True Radiant and toggle it off to see if the system maintains the setpoint more accurately.
Heads Up
- Never use a hairdryer or heat gun to "test" the sensor; the 4th Gen's thermistors are extremely sensitive and can be permanently damaged by concentrated heat.
- Keep the area within 12 inches of the thermostat clear of curtains or furniture, as this creates "dead air" pockets that lead to inaccurate readings.
- Perform a "Network Reset" if you notice the device feels physically hot to the touch, as a looping Wi-Fi connection attempt can cause the processor to overheat.
- Check your furnace filter every 30 days during peak winter; air starvation is the #1 cause of "cold spots" despite a correct thermostat reading.
