The Flush Cycle: Place a large container (at least 1 liter) under the coffee outlet. Press the brew button once. The machine will begin pumping the solution through the system in bursts. This process can take up to 10 minutes. The Rinse Cycle: Once the water tank is empty, the machine will stop. Remove the tank, rinse it thoroughly to remove any remaining chemicals, and fill it to the max line with fresh, potable water. Final Clearance: Press the brew button again to start the rinse cycle. The machine will flush the fresh water through the system to clear out the descaling agent. Exit and Reset: Once the rinsing is complete, press the brew button one last time to exit the maintenance mode. The light should return to a steady green, and the machine is now unlocked for brewing. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Hard Reset the Electronics: If the machine stays stuck in the orange blink phase even after the cycle, perform a factory reset. Unplug the machine from the wall for exactly 60 seconds. While unplugged, hold the brew button for 10 seconds to discharge remaining capacitors. Plug it back in and attempt the descaling sequence again. Check the Head Lock Mechanism: The Vertuo Next has a sensor that detects if the head is fully locked. If there is a piece of a capsule stuck in the rim or the locking handle isn't fully engaged, the machine will blink orange. Open the head, clear any debris from the seal, and lock it firmly until it clicks. Update via Bluetooth: If you have the Nespresso app paired, check for a firmware update. Some early versions of the Vertuo Next had a bug where the descaling alert would trigger prematurely or fail to reset. Updating the firmware via the app often clears these ghost alerts. Clean the Optical Sensor: Use a damp cloth to clean the barcode reader (the clear plastic ring inside the head). If the machine cannot read the barcode on the pod, it may default to an error state that mimics the descaling alert. HEADS UP Avoid Vinegar: Never use white vinegar for descaling the Vertuo Next. Vinegar is too acidic for the internal seals and can leave a permanent taste in the brew; always use citric-acid-based descalers. Water Hardness: If you live in a hard-water area, perform this process every 3 months regardless of whether the light blinks to prevent pump failure. Complete the Cycle: If you interrupt the descaling process halfway through, the machine may lock itself further, requiring a full factory reset before it will allow you to start the process again. Drip Tray Maintenance: Ensure the drip tray is seated correctly; a misaligned tray can sometimes interfere with the machine's sensor array, triggering unexpected light patterns.
