speed control dial doesn't seem to change anything, it's just stuck on one speed.

DIAGNOSIS The electronic speed control (ESC) circuit board has failed or the potentiometer (dial) is disconnected. This is a known failure point. FIX The speed control is not repairable. The entire switch and electronics module must be replaced. This is part of the upper housing assembly. Contact Ryobi service for a repair or replace the tool. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Before concluding it's the ESC, test with multiple batteries. A nearly dead battery can cause the router to run at minimum speed only, regardless of the dial setting. HEADS UP Running a router with a failed ESC at a constant, potentially incorrect speed is risky for certain bits and materials. You lose control over the tool's performance.

Question 2

router works fine but the led work light is super dim or flickers, doesn't really help.

DIAGNOSIS The LED or its wiring is faulty. Sawdust infiltrates the light housing near the base and damages the connection. FIX This is not a user-serviceable part. The LED is integrated into the motor housing assembly. You would need to replace the entire upper clamshell housing, which is a major disassembly. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK For a temporary fix, ensure you're using a high-output HP battery. A weak or old battery can cause the light to dim under load. But if it's flickering with a good battery, the light circuit is broken. HEADS UP Do not attempt to open the housing to fix just the LED. The switch and speed control electronics are in there. Tampering can create a shock or fire hazard.

dust port attachment keeps popping off mid-cut, even when i think it's snapped on tight.

DIAGNOSIS The plastic locking tabs on the dust port or the router's housing are worn or broken. The fit becomes loose. FIX Inspect the two locking tabs on the inside of the dust port. If they are rounded or cracked, replace the dust port (part of base assembly). If they look okay, check the corresponding slots on the router housing for debris. Clean them out. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Wrap a single layer of electrical tape around the router's port where the dust port clips on. This will increase the friction fit. Do not overdo it or you won't get it on. HEADS UP A flying dust port is a distraction and hazard. If it won't stay, remove it and use external dust collection until you fix it. Don't rely on a loose connection.

i can't get the collet to release the bit, even with the wrench it just won't loosen.

DIAGNOSIS The collet is seized due to heat, resin, or overtightening. This is common with 1/4" collets. FIX Secure the router. Use the supplied wrench on the shaft lock. Use a second wrench on the collet nut. Tap the second wrench sharply with a mallet in the loosening direction. The shock should break it free. Never apply heat. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK The collet may be mechanically damaged. You need to replace the collet assembly. It's part #RYB311203. This requires removing the entire spindle assembly from the motor. HEADS UP Do not use pliers or pipe wrenches. You will mar the collet and make it impossible to remove properly. Always use the correct pin wrench.

the clear plastic sub-base is cracked and now it vibrates like crazy, where do i even get a new one?

DIAGNOSIS The OEM polycarbonate sub-base is prone to cracking from overtightening or drops. This causes imbalance and vibration. FIX Order the replacement sub-base, part #RYB311202. Remove the old one by unscrewing the four Phillips-head screws. Install the new base, hand-tighten the screws in a crisscross pattern. Do not overtighten. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK If vibration persists, the router's spindle or motor bearings may be damaged from running with the cracked base. You'll need to have the motor assembly checked. HEADS UP A cracked base affects cut accuracy and is unsafe. Stop using it immediately. Aftermarket aluminum bases exist but may void warranty and require different screw lengths.

why is my ryobi compact router making a high-pitched whining noise and slowing down under light load?

DIAGNOSIS The motor brushes are worn out or the armature is dirty. This is a brush motor. The noise is arcing. FIX This requires disassembly. Remove the battery. Unscrew the two long housing screws near the base. Separate the clamshell halves. Locate the two carbon brushes in their holders on the motor. Replace both brushes with Ryobi part #RYB311201. Reassemble. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK With the housing open, inspect the copper commutator on the armature. If it's black or has deep grooves, the armature is damaged. The whole motor assembly likely needs replacement. HEADS UP Do not run the motor with severely worn brushes. It will permanently damage the armature. Always replace brushes in pairs.

router bit keeps slipping down while i'm using it, can't get it to stay locked at the right depth.

DIAGNOSIS The depth adjustment locking lever is not fully engaging the rack gear. This is usually due to sawdust buildup or a worn lever. FIX Unplug the battery. Rotate the depth adjustment ring to its highest position. Use compressed air to blow out the rack gear teeth and the area around the black locking lever pivot. Cycle the lever several times. Re-tighten. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK The plastic locking lever itself may be cracked or worn. Visually inspect it for cracks, especially near the pivot pin. A broken lever requires replacing the base assembly. HEADS UP Never try to use the router if the depth lock isn't secure. A slipping bit will ruin your workpiece and is dangerous. Always verify the lock before starting a cut.
