scans to my computer are coming out huge, like 10MB per page, and they take forever to email

— asked by Jamie

DIAGNOSIS The scanner defaults are set to an unnecessarily high resolution and color format, creating massive file sizes.

FIX Change the scan settings on the printer's control panel before you scan.

  • Place your document. On the home screen, tap Scan.
  • Tap Settings (the wrench icon). Go to File Type and change it from TIFF or Full Color PDF to PDF (Compact) or JPEG.
  • Tap Resolution and lower it from 600 dpi to 300 dpi for text documents or 200 dpi for photos.
  • Save these as a preset for next time.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK The driver settings on your computer are overriding the panel. If using Canon's ScanGear driver, open its utility and lower the resolution and color mode in the application settings.

HEADS UP Scanning in "Send Email" mode directly from the printer often applies aggressive compression, making files blurry. It's better to scan to a computer or network folder first, then attach.
